Former South Carolina Congressman Trey Gowdy took a brutal shot at Democrat presidential candidate Eric Swalwell on Friday, telling Fox News host Martha MacCallum that the thought of him winning the election and becoming president should “scare the ever-living hell out of you.”
“President Eric Swalwell, that ought to scare the ever-living hell out of you,” he bluntly said on FNC’s “The Story with Martha MacCallum” after the host played a clip of Swalwell speaking on MSNBC about the otherwise debunked Russian collusion delusion conspiracy theory.
During an appearance on the left-wing network earlier in the week, the 2020 contender had doubled down on his unsubstantiated belief that President Donald Trump essentially works for Russia.
That discussion had begun with host Ari Melber asking Swalwell whether he accepts “the findings in the Mueller report that do not support” his collusion delusion conspiracy theory.

“I accept that I probably should have been out there a little bit earlier because who knew how many links there were? Two hundred pages of links,” the congressman replied.
“I accept also, Ari, that prior Congresses did not have an imagination to see a president or a campaign have so many concerning conduct and not write laws to prohibit it, but it didn’t meet the standard beyond reasonable doubt. But here’s what we know: the Russians helped Donald Trump.”
“Sure, but to be clear so you’re no longer maintaining that he is an effectively quote, ‘Russian asset,'” Melber replied, referring to the 2020 contender’s previous rhetoric.
“No, I think he acts on Russia’s behalf and I challenge him to show me otherwise,” Swalwell replied.
The latter statement did not sit well with Gowdy.
“His last sentence is exactly the difference between a prosecutor and a politician,” he said to MacCallum. “Prosecutors prove that you did something, politicians make you prove you did not.”
“Did you hear his last sentence? ‘I challenge President Trump to prove that he did not do something.’ That’s what politicians do.”

Swalwell continued by tripling down.
“There’s evidence of collusion and coordination there,” he said. “It doesn’t go beyond a reasonable doubt, but that doesn’t mean this is a good guy. I mean, we know the Russians helped him. He asked the Russians to help them. The campaign expected to benefit from it. What we don’t know yet is why he won’t show us his taxes, why he won’t show us his finances.”
The president never asked the Russians to help him win. During an event in 2016, however, he did make a joke about then-Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s missing emails.
“Russia, if you’re listening, I hope you’re able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing,” he said during a press conference at the time in Doral, Fla, eliciting zero laughter from the humorless media. “I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.”
He made the joke while excoriating the Obama administration for its weak foreign policies, which he argued had made it so that neither Russia nor China respected America anymore.

Despite this being a clear-cut joke, for years the left has acted as if he’d been serious. And sadly, the lie still persists, as the president noted during his speech at this year’s CPAC.
“I’ve learned, because with the fake news, if you tell a joke, if you’re sarcastic … And if you say something like, ‘Russia, please, if you can, get us Hillary Clinton’s emails! Please, Russia, please!’ … And then that fake CNN and others say, ‘He asked Russia to go get the emails.’ Horrible,” he said.
Swalwell is among those who’ve touted the same lie. What remains unclear is if’s simply been regurgitating the media’s false reports, or if he really believes this lie. His continued Russian collusion delusion conspiracy rhetoric suggests that he genuinely believes this, among other things.
Gowdy’s criticism of the 2020 contender Friday marked the second time this month that he’d bashed him. Speaking with MacCallum two weeks ago, he derided Swalwell as someone “none of your viewers are familiar with and they won’t be a year from now.”
He issued the quip after MacCallum played a clip of Swalwell speaking derogatorily to the media about Attorney General Bill Barr’s testimony to Congress about the Mueller report.
“I think that last voice was Eric Swalwell’s, and for your viewers that don’t know who that is, that’s a member of the Judiciary Committee and Intelligence Committee from California,” Gowdy said after the clip finished playing. “He’s running for president, which I’m sure none of your viewers are familiar with and they won’t be a year from now. So he’s trying to get attention.”

He wasn’t wrong. The 2020 contender is a veritable nobody this election cycle.
He’s so irrelevant that most Democrat primary polls don’t even include him. And even when he’s included, he never obtains more than 1 percent of the vote, if even that much.
Data from Nate Silver’s FiveThirtyEight shows that recent polling data has him at 0 percent, 1 percent, 1 percent, 0 percent, 0 percent and 1 percent. What a winner …

While it’s unclear why exactly the public is so disinterested in him, the possibility remains that it could be because the American people think that he’s out of his ever-loving mind.
