Chris Matthews has weighed in on the fallout from the release of the Mueller report and the “Hardball” host says he believes Democrats should keep trying to “get to the truth.”
In an interview with fellow MSNBC employee Brian Williams, Matthews said an “impeachment exercise” should be what’s next for Democrats.
“What I think it comes down to – let’s face it, Jerry Nadler, who is listening to Nancy Pelosi, and Nancy Pelosi has made a political judgment that without Republican support for an impeachment exercise, she shouldn’t go along with it for political reasons,” Matthews said. “In other words, if you can’t make the case in a bipartisan fashion, don’t make it because it will only serve the purpose of hurting yourself politically. Now as journalists, as commentators – we can say that’s not really the right way to make a decision because you’ve been saying all along with your questions about Trump and his behavior were non-partisan.”
Matthews continued by saying that Democrats backing off of their accusations of collusion for fear of political backlash are not being “consistent.”
“You simply want to get the truth and follow the truth,” said Matthews. “But you can’t step back and say, ‘Well, now I’m going to make a political judgment because it’s not in our interest to pursue this in a political fashion if that’s what it comes to. Well, that’s not being consistent. If you’re going after the truth, go all the way to the truth and the way to get the truth is an impeachment exercise. That’s how you get the truth. That’s how you get the subpoena power that will be upheld. I think this Supreme Court will support the right of any Congress to advance the cause of an impeachment after any exercise.”
The “Hardball” host doubled down on his impeachment thoughts later when he took to Twitter to share a clip from his interview with Brian Williams.
“Was asked by Brian what comes next. I think the Democratic controlled House should continue pursuing the truth. And one way to get to the truth is an impeachment exercise,” wrote Matthews along with the clip.

The Mueller investigation dragged on for two long years and ended up being nothing more than a costly distraction for the American people. Money was burned and partisanship was fueled by the controversial investigation. It ending is only good for the country.
This doesn’t matter to leftists unwilling to accept the results of the report. Critics like Matthews are fine with the costly and controversial investigation essentially continuing in the form of impeachment proceedings.
While few have gone as far as suggesting impeachment for Trump following the release of the Mueller report, many on the left have refused to accept the results revealed by Attorney General William Barr.
Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and other Democrats have publicly called for Robert Mueller himself to testify before Congress about the investigation.
