Certain Fox News media personalities seem suddenly scared witless by the prospect of the president sending all the overflow border migrants to sanctuary cities.
On Friday, President Trump confirmed that he is considering a move to have migrants who arrive at the border to be bussed only to sanctuary cities. It’s a beautifully Karmic idea, but of course, his political opponents are stumbling all over themselves proclaiming that it can’t happen, that it’s presidentially inappropriate, that it’s illegal, and on and on.
The news brought out the best in Shepard Smith and Chris Wallace, who couldn’t wait to slam the proposal six ways to Sunday. Smith immediately insisted that he had heard “immigration officials stated that doing so would be illegal.”
He added that “critics say that it’s nothing but an effort to use migrants as pawns to go after political opponents.”
Chris Wallace commiserated with Smith … who coincidentally have proven to be the two most anti-Trump Fox News anchors. “The White House came back last night and said this is an idea that was floated and rejected. That was the end of it.” It seems it would have been appropriate to see Wallace stomping his feet about it at this point.
He continued, “They also flatly denied that there was any effort of political retaliation here.”
Perhaps wanting to cry out, ‘It’s just not fair, Shep!’ Wallace commented, “Now suddenly, quite a surprise to, I think, everybody, the President this afternoon comes out with a tweet and says no, this isn’t over. I’m seriously considering it. You saw him say in that press availability just now, I’m seriously considering this. They want open borders, they want people there, we’ll give them people, which sure sounds like political retaliation.
“Here’s my guess, and it is only a guess, take it for what it’s worth.” Wallace declared, “This will never happen, this is the President saying we’re not going to cower and try to pretend we didn’t really do this. I’m going to double-down and suggest it. ‘My base will like it.’ But will it ever happen? I would be shocked.”
The President tweeted on Friday: “Due to the fact that Democrats are unwilling to change our very dangerous immigration laws, we are indeed, as reported, giving strong considerations to placing Illegal Immigrants in Sanctuary Cities only.”
Sanctuary cities and sanctuary states are not legally sanctioned by federal law, but are in fact jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement. They are all essentially Democrat-controlled and are breaking federal law.
A White House statement last year pointed out: “… according to Congress, a city that prohibits its officials from providing information to federal immigration authorities — a sanctuary city — is violating the law.”
Democrats have been at the forefront supporting illegal immigration and open borders, as well as standing in the way of building a border wall and enforcing current immigration laws. The idea of relieving some of the overwhelming pressure building at the southern border by allowing those sanctuary cities to take-in the migrants is a natural outcome of the leftist rhetoric about allowing illegals into the country.
Oh-oh … not so fast said Nancy Pelosi, whose San Francisco congressional district would be at the top of the list for the offloading those journeying from Central America to the border. She said, “… just another notion that is unworthy of the president of the United States and disrespectful of the challenges we face.” Umm … what?
Fox Commentator Jesse Watters had Fox contributor Geraldo Rivera on his program and asked, “Geraldo, I don’t know if this idea is actually going to happen but it does serve the purpose of illustrating the hypocrisy from some of the Democrats in this country who say, yes, bring them in, provide sanctuary city, just not in my city.”
“Let me stop by agreeing that I think that a lot of what the President is saying is born of frustration because of the lack of cooperation by the Democrats on the border,” Rivera replied. “They are doing nothing to help, other than making things more difficult. But this is a stunt. This is also illegal. I’m telling you, it’s illegal … you cannot use people as props to make a political point.”
Meanwhile on CNN, Jake Tapper had an interview with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. “Thank you so much, sir,” said Tapper. “I know you weren’t present for the conversation between the President and commissioner McAleenan, but would you know, or what do you say to senior administration officials when they say to you, boy, President Trump is so frustrated by these immigration laws, he doesn’t seem to understand that we have to adhere to them even if he doesn’t like them?”
“I’ve been in lots of conversations on the enormous crisis at our border and I have watched this President try to use every tool in our tool kit,” Pompeo responded. “We have done everything that we can. We’ve stayed within the law. We need Congress to make changes to that, so that we can stop this humanitarian and security crisis. And every meeting I’ve been in has been very focused on that.”
