An injury and an arrest interrupted an event featuring a conservative speaker at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Daily Wire columnist Michael Knowles was not injured when a protester attempted to throw an “odorous substance” thought to be bleach on him as he spoke Thursday at the event hosted by the university’s College Republicans and Young Americans for Freedom.

Knowles, a Fox News contributor and host of “The Michael Knowles Show” on the Daily Wire, was speaking at the event on the topic, “Men Are Not Women.”
The topic of my speech tonight is “Men Are Not Women.” This fact apparently upsets some people.

There was apparently a plan already in place to disrupt the speech with a planned silent walk-out before heading to the Inclusion Spring Bash at the University Walkway.

“The protest turned disruptive and after several warnings, the disruption persisted,” a statement released on UMKC’s Twitter account read.
Protesters disrupted a lecture on the UMKC campus this evening that was sponsored by a student group. The protest turned disruptive and after several warnings, the disruption persisted, and one protester was arrested. (1 of 2)

Knowles tweeted that a student tried to squirt what he thought was bleach at him.
A student tried to squirt bleach on me during my speech tonight. Lucky for me we was a left-winger and couldn’t even shoot a squirt gun! pic.twitter.com/VHKS4hD4vW

He noted the odor of the substance which got on his face, but later tweeted that police told him it was not bleach.
He got me a bit in the face and on the side. At first I thought it was paint because of the color and smell. Later found out it was bleach. These are the people conservatives on campus are up against.
— Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) April 12, 2019
It’s still not clear what exactly substance was, but now seems apparent this thug only wanted to give the impression of a chemical attack without actually getting charged with a felony. More info to come as I hear it.
— Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) April 12, 2019
UPDATE: authorities now telling me it was not bleach — unknown odorous liquid, appears the attacker was a hoaxer who was fine getting charged with assault but wanted to avoid a felony

The Daily Wire posted a video of the scene on YouTube.
The protester, who was taken down by police who had to use a taser as the person was resisting arrest, was injured and treated at the scene, according to KCTV.
Outside of the venue, protesters held signs declaring, “Trans rights are human rights,” “Respect my existence,” and “Trans men are men.”

According to KCTV:
There were also protesters inside the lecture hall in an attempt to disrupt the speech. Someone who was there showed KCTV5 News video that they took and protesters could be seen going up and down the stairs, yelling and shouting, but things were not physical. Then, someone can be seen getting taken down to the ground.
A university spokesperson said it had gotten to the point of being disruptive, so they were trying to get people out of the building. Something then “went off” or “liquid” was sprayed, according to witnesses. Due to things becoming physically disruptive, they tried to arrest someone.
Everyone was then pushed out of the room, but people were trying to get back inside.
The university was “gathering facts” according to a statement which also condemned “physical disruptions of peaceful activities.”
We have a responsibility to allow free speech, but we cannot condone physical disruptions of peaceful activities. We believe free speech can be exercised constructively in a way that doesn’t put people at risk. We are gathering facts and will review campus policies & procedures.

“What is it with leftists and criminal hoaxes?” Knowles asked in a tweet following the incident.
What is it with leftists and criminal hoaxes?
— Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) April 12, 2019
Most millennial thing ever. Trying to emulate something without it actually being the genuine thing. Like vegan bacon.
— Audrey Hazdra (@hiaudreygrace) April 12, 2019
He also joked about the fake bleach with a reference to actor Jussie Smollett who allegedly staged a fake hate-crime against himself in January.
What are the odds that guy who sprayed the fake chemical on me tonight turns out to be Jussie Smollett?
— Michael Knowles (@michaeljknowles) April 12, 2019
Many Twitter users reacted to the incident and the protesting students, noting how things could have gone very badly.

Wow Republican @michaeljknowles was attacked by a masked leftist that shot an unknown substance at him during his event in Missouri. Police took down the attacker and other leftists had the audacity to scream “hands up don’t shoot” at officers. Lunatics! pic.twitter.com/AGNoNg2fJS
— Robby Starbuck (@robbystarbuck) April 12, 2019
This is unreal. Kid could have easily been shot. If we can’t host debate with people we disagree with, we are on the verge of at best segregation and at worst mass civil violence. This has to change. Learn to “agree to disagree.”
— Josh Duvall NJ ?? (@JoshDuvallNJ) April 12, 2019
It’s more than a little scary that the person was able to bring a super soaker filled with who knows what in and was able to get close enough to shoot Michael with it. What if it was a dangerous substance? What if it was more than a squirt gun?
— Charles Farley “Welder Bear” ???? (@CUFarley8) April 12, 2019
Ironically they are chanting “hands up don’t shoot” … as if to imply that they will cooperate … as the man continues to resist and not comply by putting his hands where they need them.
— Chadpartyof5 (@Chadpartyof5) April 12, 2019
Great tactical plan. Pull out a huge water gun while wearing a mask within easy reach of at least three security officers.

And many praised Knowles for remaining calm and handling the whole thing so well.
You confronted a powerful delusion with grace and good humor. But I guess confronting a delusion is like poking a hornet’s nest. Thank you for your stand for truth and reality.

@michaeljknowles is a Really Nice Guy & would listen to any criticism so why not just wait for the Q&A to disagree with him. This proves most Young people on the #Left cant use their words. They have 0 intelligence & are driven by #SJW Propaganda. This is #sad https://t.co/fq8hoNOxAi

Micheal, you handled the toxic crowd superbly! I had not heard you lecture before. Thank you to the hyenas for bringing you to the forefront and highlighting how warped they actually are, great work! ??
— MimiE (@MimiE58916632) April 12, 2019
I’m impressed @michaeljknowles, you didn’t even flinch when sprayed in the face with a “bleach like substance.” In fact, you squared up on they guy and advanced on him. #Fearless

I’ve never seen the amount of disrespect given to a public speaker on campus that I am watching right now with @michaeljknowles @yaf speech. These people should be ashamed of themselves and you never see conservatives do this to speakers. Ever.
