An injury and an arrest interrupted an event featuring a conservative speaker at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Daily Wire columnist Michael Knowles was not injured when a protester attempted to throw an “odorous substance” thought to be bleach on him as he spoke Thursday at the event hosted by the university’s College Republicans and Young Americans for Freedom.

Knowles, a Fox News contributor and host of “The Michael Knowles Show” on the Daily Wire, was speaking at the event on the topic, “Men Are Not Women.”

There was apparently a plan already in place to disrupt the speech with a planned silent walk-out before heading to the Inclusion Spring Bash at the University Walkway.

“The protest turned disruptive and after several warnings, the disruption persisted,” a statement released on UMKC’s Twitter account read.

Knowles tweeted that a student tried to squirt what he thought was bleach at him.

He noted the odor of the substance which got on his face, but later tweeted that police told him it was not bleach.

The Daily Wire posted a video of the scene on YouTube.

The protester, who was taken down by police who had to use a taser as the person was resisting arrest, was injured and treated at the scene, according to KCTV.

Outside of the venue, protesters held signs declaring, “Trans rights are human rights,” “Respect my existence,” and “Trans men are men.”

According to KCTV:

There were also protesters inside the lecture hall in an attempt to disrupt the speech. Someone who was there showed KCTV5 News video that they took and protesters could be seen going up and down the stairs, yelling and shouting, but things were not physical. Then, someone can be seen getting taken down to the ground.

A university spokesperson said it had gotten to the point of being disruptive, so they were trying to get people out of the building. Something then “went off” or “liquid” was sprayed, according to witnesses. Due to things becoming physically disruptive, they tried to arrest someone.

Everyone was then pushed out of the room, but people were trying to get back inside.

The university was “gathering facts” according to a statement which also condemned “physical disruptions of peaceful activities.”

“What is it with leftists and criminal hoaxes?” Knowles asked in a tweet following the incident.

He also joked about the fake bleach with a reference to actor Jussie Smollett who allegedly staged a fake hate-crime against himself in January.

Many Twitter users reacted to the incident and the protesting students, noting how things could have gone very badly.

And many praised Knowles for remaining calm and handling the whole thing so well.
