Ex-Obama lawyer one big step closer to being first high-profile Dem indicted under Mueller probe

So it begins.

Greg Craig, a high-powered attorney who served as White House counsel in the Obama administration and as senior legal adviser to Bill Clinton during his impeachment investigation, is expected to be indicted for lying to DOJ investigators during the Mueller investigation. It’s possible other charges will also be leveled.

As BPR reported last month, Craig will likely be the first high-profile Democrat to be charged in connection with the special counsel witch hunt. Because Craig refused a plea deal, a grand jury indictment may come as soon as today, Thursday, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The Justice Department was not commenting as of yet.

Mueller’s team interviewed Craig twice. Charges are expected to come as a result of false statements made about lobbying work that he and his law firm did in Ukraine in 2012. Craig apparently never registered as a foreign agent under the Foreign Agents Registration Act, a law requiring lobbyists to declare their representation of foreign leaders, governments, or political parties.

Former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort has been convicted of several charges, which include convictions related to his political work in Ukraine.

Attorneys for Craig delivered a statement to the media on Thursday, saying U.S. Attorney’s office in Washington, D.C. will bring charges against their client for his involvement in activities with Ukrainian politicians and with Manafort.

“Mr. Craig is not guilty of any charge,” his attorneys stated. They said regarding the pending action by U.S. attorneys that “government’s stubborn insistence on prosecuting Mr. Craig is a misguided abuse of prosecutorial discretion.”

Craig was White House counsel from 2009 to 2010. He also represented John Hinckley, Jr., who tried to assassinate President Ronald Reagan in 1981. Hinckley was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Ukraine is increasingly becoming a focal point for potential investigative scrutiny. Earlier this month, news resurfaced about former VP Joe Biden bragging on camera about strong-arming the Ukrainian president to fire the country’s lead prosecutor who happened to be initiating a corruption investigation that involved Biden’s son.

Last month, the current top prosecutor in Ukraine announced that he has found collusion and that he is launching a probe into the possibility of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 election meddling.

According to the Washington Examiner, “Craig’s then-law firm, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP, entered into a $4.6 million settlement with the Justice Department in January over its work in Ukraine. The settlement blamed Craig for providing the Justice Department misleading information.”

No honor among thieves, right? Images of the bus-tire tracks across Craig’s midsection are likely.
