Fox News contributor Lawrence Jones defended himself against vicious critics who made a mockery of his report from the U.S.-Mexico border.
Jones lashed back at the hecklers – who included Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – after his tweet of a photo of himself wearing a small tactical vest was roasted on Twitter, explaining on “Hannity” that he was directed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection to put it on.
“I know these really dumb people that are in our industry had a lot to say about what you’re wearing now, but what they don’t know is — or care to ask you before they write about it, is…?” Fox News host Sean Hannity asked Jones on Thursday, referring to the photo on Twitter.

“The Border Patrol agents standing here to keep us safe told me to put it on to keep us safe here,” Jones replied, explaining that there was a shooting at the location a few months ago.
“What people don’t understand is that we control this side of the border, but the cartel controls the other side of the border. There’s been gun fights. I’m going in danger with these Border Patrol agents to report on this story,” he continued. “The public doesn’t know that over the last two and a half years, there has been an uptick, over 200 percent, of violence against these agents.”
Jones was ridiculed on Twitter Thursday after posting his photo, with social media users – many who are in the media – deriding his bulletproof gear.
1. Next time you might want to buy the vest from the adults section.
2. That’s a decorative prop, not a functional piece of protective gear. https://t.co/PjN8Wk0YQJ

Jones fired back at the critics in his comments, saying Border Patrol agents “required” that he wear the vest during his “ride along.”
Easy. The agent standing right in front of me RIGHT NOW said, “when you’re with me I’m responsible for your safety. So you’re putting on a vest.” https://t.co/hHbxZc5EML

He invited democratic socialist Ocasio-Cortez to join him at the border and see the danger herself rather than jeer at him from the comfort of her Washington, D.C. office.
Congresswoman, I’m sure the Border Patrol Laredo Sector, would be happy to give you a full briefing on the crisis here on the border. How about you join me & see for yourself. We just capture 8 illegals 3 minutes ago. Thankfully they weren’t armed like the others 2 days ago. https://t.co/1Vegeth3Cl

“Did I say it was a war zone or did you ignorantly assume that because I was wearing a vest?” he said in response to another Twitter critic. “Bottom line: CBP instructed me to put on one of their vests during my ride along. Period.”
Border patrol made me wear it. Now, who’s the fool? https://t.co/8ytTDLATth

Jones explained to Hannity that the agents, who were beside him though off-camera, provided him with the tactical vest which was “safer than their equipment.”
“Last night, as we’re going into the thick of it, we caught two Chinese nationals. How in the world did they get to Mexico to get into this country? The cartel,” Jones explained.
In this clip Jones also says the agents he’s with last night apprehended “two Chinese nationals,” who pay the cartels $15-$20K for entry into the U.S.

“Last night we had breaking news during the middle of the show because those two illegals were trying to come across in the middle of the show. As soon as we got off air, the Border Patrol agent you see behind me rushed out and I got in another car. We rushed out there to push them back to the border. We didn’t catch them but we did make them return back to Mexico,” Jones recounted.
“That’s the type of work these Border Patrol agents are doing,” he said, adding that “most of the time, these agents are by themselves. That means if they get into a gun fight or anything, they’re by themselves. They could lose their life as a result of that.”
Critics called out Jones on Twitter for his claims about the danger he was under during his reporting, with some arguing that there has “never, ever been any requirement or need” for a reporter to wear a tactical vest at the southern border.
The meme game on this post’s replies is spectacular
(Nota bene: There has never, ever been any requirement or need to wear a flak jacket at the US-Mexico border, and nobody’s ever heard of a reporter doing so at any time) https://t.co/AoJsPy4uox

MSNBC’s Jacob Soboroff called the vest “totally ridiculous.”
This is totally ridiculous.
I have never once worn a bulletproof vest at the border, nor has CBP ever asked me to — even while on a chase with Border Patrol to apprehend migrants in remote Arizona desert in the middle of the night.
Because. The. Border. Is. Not. A. War. Zone. https://t.co/Q1V95e7N5x

Other Twitter users mocked the photo as “cosplay” and turned it into memes.

But many others came to Jones’ defense, thanking him for his reporting and calling for some more civility from social media users.
Of course. I don’t think people should assume. Especially when they can just ask. The vest has a CBP badge on it.
— Lawrence Jones III (@LawrenceBJones3) April 4, 2019
Thank you, which is exactly I asked. Yes, vest has CBP on it, but could have been requested by the network.
IMO, providing context would have helped prevent people from misinterpreting the image, which is a striking one considering.
Thank you for the dialogue. Stay dapper. ??

And following Jones’ own thanks to the hard-working agents who kept him safe, conservative commentator Allie Beth Stuckey provided a parting shot at Ocasio-Cortez and her “socialist ilk.”

Thank you for doing your part in drawing attention to @LawrenceBJones3‘s good work at the border! I hope that you and all your socialist ilk will tune into @seanhannity on Fox tonight to see what’s actually going on there. You guys could use a little dose of reality. https://t.co/hZaubzR5e3
