Maybe we all need to breathe a moment before spouting off on social media.
Fox News chief White House correspondent John Roberts posted a joke to Twitter suggesting that the Trump administration’s press officials were covering up the president’s golf habits.
In his tweet, Roberts accused White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Hogan Gidley of not divulging whom the president was playing golf with on Saturday. Attached to his tweet was a photo posted earlier in the day by musician Kid Rock that showed the rock star golfing with the president.
“Another great day on the links! Thank you to POTUS for having me and to EVERYONE at Trump International for being so wonderful. What a great man, so down to earth and so fun to be with!! KEEP AMERICA GREAT!!” the musician had written.
Mystery solved!
Look:
.@hogangidley45 would not divulge who @realDonaldTrump was playing golf with today. https://t.co/PDCvhkLihv

Some of the president’s supporters interpreted the tweet as a diss of Trump.
“Why do we care who President Trump plays golf with? Why is this news? Don’t let the door hit you where the good lord split you…..,” one wrote.
“Does it really matter if he’s playing golf? It is Sat. When Obama played or watched basketball did it bother anyone? What’s with the negative spin on everything he does all of a sudden? Was ok when Pelosi was on vacation during the shutdown and others in PR right ?” another added.
Look at these tweets and Roberts’ response below:
Well, you cared enough to tweet that you didn’t care……. https://t.co/Kt4B1ZNnbC

I actually thought it was pretty cool that he was playing golf with Kid Rock. I’m a big Kid Rock fan. And I was making light of the fact that the WH wouldn’t tell us who POTUS was playing with…….and then Kid came out with a big tweet and a photo. https://t.co/BimDp8V3rS

His responses seemed to only make the president’s supporters angrier.
“Did you think it was pretty cool when Obama played golf?” one asked.
Another suggested that reporting on Trump’s golfing habits isn’t “healthy for our country.”
Now note how the Fox News correspondent reacted:
I never reported on Obama playing golf, so it’s a moot point. But I will say, every time I play golf, it’s a national tragedy… https://t.co/XLYmjvsnWB
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
Hmm….retweeting a Kid Rock tweet that he played golf with POTUS is “not healthy for our country”………uh……you lost me there… https://t.co/vjaT6BPaAo
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
If he never reported on former President Barack Hussein Obama’s golfing habits, why is he now reporting on Trump’s golfing habits? Was it just to make a joke?
“Johnny, if you are making light of that fact, you have to make it more clear that you are doing so, because you came across as a pompous media elitist, almost Acosta-like,” one supporter wrote.
Apparently, some Trump supporters think Roberts’ jokes require a trigger warning.
Next time I retweet, I will preface my comment with “HUMOR ALERT” https://t.co/tVB0GyYg3L
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
Frustrated by the negative response to his initial tweet, Roberts chose to post a new one and add the words “mystery solved” to it to make its jokey-jokey intent more clear.
This strategy didn’t seem to work.
Look:
Let me try this again:
.@hogangidley45 would not divulge who @realDonaldTrump was playing golf with today…….mystery solved!!!!! https://t.co/D7EGcqXKcN— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
Jealous, John Boy???

Jealous John?

We are on to you Roberts. Time for you and your afternoon buddy to go.

But not everybody reacted like this. One Twitter user came to Roberts’ defense.
“Would love to see you post a story on how anytime you mention anything negative about POTUS, you are immediately attacked by his supporters. I’ve seen you have to defend too many tweets in last couple months,” the Twitter user wrote.
Roberts responded by noting that the Kid Rock post wasn’t meant to be negative and arguing that those of his prior tweets that were “negative,” per se, were just factual observations.
Look:
Here’s the interesting thing. I haven’t posted anything negative. I retweeted a Kid Rock tweet that included the fact the White House wouldn’t say who POTUS played golf with (and I was joking). And I tweeted an accurate timeline of the back and forth over John McCain….. https://t.co/SYGhdrAHaa
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
…and I tweeted some facts about border apprehensions. While some of those facts contradicted what POTUS has said, there was nothing even remotely negative about the President. We simply live in a world where some people see a statement of the facts as an attack. It’s not.
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
It’s just the facts.
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
His point about facts was ignored:
Sometimes the facts contradict a narrative, but facts are not innately negative. They’re just…….facts….. https://t.co/cUZeGqpWQD
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
Fed-up with the never-ending backlash, Roberts eventually decided to just give up comedy:
This is a Twitter feed, not a newscast. But I promise never to tell a joke again. https://t.co/gmYGJgGUWv
— John Roberts (@johnrobertsFox) March 23, 2019
While all the backlash he received may seem silly to some, there’s a possible explanation for it.
On Friday counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian collusion concluded without anyone having ever been charged, indicted or convicted for collusion. This means that the Russian collusion conspiracy theory has officially been debunked. Collusion never happened.
But some left-wing personalities are so invested in the collusion conspiracy theory that they refuse to accept this outcome and are now accusing the Justice Department of covering up the truth.
“The fact that this investigation takes place within the Justice Department, which Donald Trump essentially controls, and that he got rid of the problem, Jeff Sessions, who — the one decent thing that he did was just recuse himself. This guy is not recused. It feels like the seeds of a cover-up are here,” far-left MSNBC host Joy Reid said Saturday morning.
Listen:
Perhaps the reason Trump’s supporters lashed out at Roberts was because they felt like he was acting like Reid?
