Rep Clyburn digs Dems deeper, makes ‘offensive’ Holocaust comparison to defend Ilhan Omar

In the running list of excuses made by the left for Rep. Ilhan Omar’s anti-Semitism, Rep. James Clyburn just offered his stunning addition.

The South Carolina Democrat suggested Wednesday that Omar’s experience of escaping violence in Somalia where she was born was “more personal” than that of Jews who had parents survive the Holocaust, The Hill reported.

“I’m serious about that. There are people who tell me, ‘Well, my parents are Holocaust survivors.’ ‘My parents did this.’ It’s more personal with her,” the House Majority Whip said. “I’ve talked to her, and I can tell you she is living through a lot of pain.”

Liberals have come to Omar’s defense in the wake of fiery backlash over her repeated use of antisemitic tropes and frequent controversial comments. Democrats delayed a vote on an resolution that was prompted by the outcry over the Minnesota Democrat’s antisemitism though it failed to mention her by name.

The freshman Democrat has come under fire for her comments and recent tweets about the “dual loyalty” of congressional members on Israel, with her remarks on the Israel-Palestine conflict and on Israel itself drawing backlash from many, including  top-ranking Democrats and her colleagues on the Foreign Affairs Committee.

Omar’s defenders have created such a rift in the party that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was reportedly overwhelmed with frustration Thursday.

But the California Democrat joined her colleagues in offering excuses for Omar later.

Omar continues to get support from progressives and from the likes of Clyburn who declared that the Muslim congresswoman would not be “targeted” in the resolution being considered.

“She won’t be targeted. We’re going to target those people who had her picture on the Twin Towers,” Clyburn said, referring to a controversial GOP display in the West Virginia statehouse. “This resolution is going to be inclusive; it’s going to be expansive.”

According to The Hill:

Clyburn came to Omar’s defense Wednesday, lamenting that many of the media reports surrounding the recent controversy have omitted mentioning that Omar, who was born in Somalia, had to flee the country to escape violence and spent four years in a Kenyan refugee camp before coming to the United States.

Her experience, Clyburn argued, is much more empirical — and powerful — than that of people who are generations removed from the Holocaust, Japanese internment camps during World War II and the other violent episodes that have marked history.

 

The Anti-Defamation League blasted Clyburn in a tweet.

Defending Omar’s anti-Semitism seems offensive enough, but contrasting her “experience” with Holocaust survivors and their families is beyond the pale.
