There’s no denying that America faces a serious cultural divide today, with left and right more angry and polarized than at any time in recent memory.
Some believe there is a cultural-driven civil war of sorts underway, based on severe social and ideological disagreements, but Joseph diGenova, the former U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia, believes that divide will eventually result in violence.
Appearing on The Laura Ingraham Podcast, diGenova said our differences go beyond civil discord and that it’s going to result in “total war,” saying people should take care to properly arm themselves.
On Thursday’s show, Ingraham was discussing how the left used the alleged attack on actor Jussie Smollett to distract from the disastrous blackface scandal in Virginia — Gov. Ralph Northam is still in office, as is fellow Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax, who faces sexual assault allegations.
She pointed out that when the Smollett story blew up in the left’s face after the actor was charged for staging the whole affair, they quickly pivot to the story of a troubled Coast Guard lieutenant who claimed to be a white supremacist compiling a hit list of prominent Democrats and media personalities.
DiGenova responded to say, “We are in a civil war in this country.”
“There’s two standards of justice, one for Democrats one for Republicans,” he added. “The press is all Democrat, all liberal, all progressive, all left – they hate Republicans, they hate [President] Trump.
“So the suggestion there’s ever going to be civil discourse in this country for the foreseeable future in this country is over. It’s not going to be. It’s going to be total war. And as I say to my friends, I do two things – I vote and I buy guns.”
Naturally, the liberal media will be all over the comment, not that they haven’t done their share of saber rattling.
In October, NPR reported that there’s a “deep national pessimism about the outlook for peaceful politics in the United States.”
Citing a CBS News poll that found 73 percent of Americans felt the tone of the political debate encourages violence, the liberal news outfit reported “the concept of a new civil war has seeped out into the open, especially on the right.”
That same month, the Washington Post informed readers that “fantasies and fears of a second civil war have seldom been more popular than in the past few years.”
Granted, the piece was saying these fears are unfounded, primarily because we are too pessimistic as a country to believe war can solve our problems, but the concept of violent civil war was still being propagated.
And diGenova is simply calling on Americans to be prepared for the worst.
