Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez celebrated news that Amazon cancelled its plans for a New York City headquarters, taking with it thousands of jobs.
The decision appeared to be a victory of sorts for the freshman New York congresswoman after her very vocal opposition to the e-commerce giant’s desire to build its second headquarters in Long Island City.

The self-proclaimed Democratic socialist touted the news in a celebratory tweet on Thursday, blasting Amazon’s “corporate greed” and “worker exploitation.”
Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world. https://t.co/nyvm5vtH9k

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, both Democrats, had pushed for the deal that would have created at least 25,000 new jobs. But Ocasio-Cortez and fired-up angry residents slammed the incentives package which effectively gave the company a $3 billion payment in tax breaks and subsidies.
“For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long-term,” the company said in a statement, according to Fox Business.” While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”
AMAZON CANCELS PLAN TO COME TO NEW YORK
“After much thought and deliberation, we’ve decided not to move forward with our plans to build a headquarters for Amazon in Long Island City, Queens” – Amazon spokeswoman Jodi Seth

De Blasio regretted that Amazon “threw away” the chance to do business “in the greatest city in the world,” though it seemed the company had little choice in the face of the hostile environment created by critics.
As political commentator John Burnett noted, ‘progressives’ aren’t about job creation, and Americans should take notice:
NYC politicians just got a free education on free markets, economics, business investment, what not to do in negotiations, and how elected officials/#Progressives kill jobs. #Amazon #AmazonHQ2

The Valentine’s Day break-up seemed like ironic timing for the announcement.
Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
NYC & AOC,
it’s not me– it’s youAll the best,

I can’t believe they broke up with NY on Valentine’s day.

While Ocasio-Cortez smugly applauded the news, it seems she was also keeping out of the spotlight.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is not giving interviews on the Amazon announcement, per her spokesman. He says to keep tabs on her twitter @AOC

No interviews for Ocasio-Cortez on Amazon’s decision to pull out of the NYC HQ2 deal. The one-way street known as Twitter will serve as the communications platform for now: https://t.co/V5UTe24s4p

AOC: How dare Amazon make a huge investment, being tens of thousands of jobs here & get a tax break because it’s highly competitive and NYC wanted HQ2 here badly?
Amazon: Okay, we’re not coming anymore.
AOC: …….um, I win? pic.twitter.com/VmMJPtPww5

Many were not patting the freshman lawmaker on the back.
25,000 jobs plus countless other jobs created from #Amazon coming to #LIC
YOUR district @AOC
Bang up job Sandy…give yourself a pat@NYGovCuomo @NYCMayor you allowed this
Let the exodus from NY continue at a faster pace

Utterly shameful that the community board kowtowed to a bunch of socialist activists. I live in Manhattan and work in RE finance. This is a huge blow to the city and will have long lasting negative ramifications.

The richest man in the world remains rich.
Amazon remains huge.
Unemployed New Yorkers remain unemployed.
And MTA remains terrible.
Another great win for the Freshest of the Fresh Faces of the Democrats.

And others wondered what the move could spell for 2020.
Marking Amazon exit as the moment when @AOC‘s potent rhetoric first translated into policy

Because it’s 2019 AOC is going to get a lot of credit for this nationally but I wonder if her opposition hurts her locally.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Like jobs.

Let’s see if the Democrats have the guts to primary AOC for costing NYC thousands of jobs.
New Jersey will happily take those jobs, @amazon https://t.co/fdvQs3tqEl

Good luck finding enough small businesses to give that much in tax breaks to that would provide us with 25k jobs averaging at least $80k in salary a year.
The income tax revenue NYC and NY just lost is in the hundred million dollar a year range. That’s real money.
— Connor (@connormw) February 14, 2019
It’s OK. Everyone who could have worked at Amazon can be bartenders and then win a primary election for Congress with 14,000 votes.
