Singer is brutalized on Twitter for mocking grammy-nominated rapper nabbed by ICE, in US illegally AND a convicted felon

Singer Demi Lovato deactivated her Twitter account following backlash over comments on rapper 21 Savage who was arrested by ICE agents in Georgia.

The 26-year-old came under fire when she posted that she was “laughing at” memes that surfaced after news broke about the arrest of the rapper, whose real name is Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Atlanta on Sunday.

“F–k Twitter. This is why I don’t tweet anymore,” Lovato said before she deactivated her account.

News that the rapper had been arrested and was facing deportation because he is actually a British citizen who overstayed his visa went viral on Sunday, prompting countless internet memes, many with American Revolution and British Red Coats images.

“So far 21 savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl,” Lovato said in a since-deleted tweet, according to Fox News.

An attorney for the Grammy-nominated rapper, Dina LaPolt, said they were “working diligently to get Mr. Abraham-Joseph out of detention while we work with the authorities to clear up any misunderstandings,” Fox News reported.

As US immigration policies and the southern border have been front and center in so many recent headlines, the arrest of the 26-year-old rapper, who is closely associated with the Atlanta area he calls home, highlighted the scope of immigration laws which are not directed at just Latin nationals, as critics have contended.

ICE spokesman Bryan Cox told WSB-TV Atlanta. that agents “arrested unlawfully present United Kingdom national Sha Yaa Bin Abraham-Joseph AKA ’21 Savage’ during a targeted operation with federal and local law enforcement partners early Sunday in metro Atlanta.”

Fans of the rapper, and critics of President Trump and his immigration policies, slammed ICE and defended 21 Savage despite the fact that he was not targeted because he is Mexican but because he broke the law by overstaying his visa. The rapper is also a convicted felon as the agency noted, which added to his federal immigration violation and deportation, highlighting again that the president’s immigration polices are not about discrimination but about protection.

“Mr. Abraham-Joseph was taken into ICE custody as he is unlawfully present in the U.S. and also a convicted felon,” Cox said.

“Mr. Abraham-Joseph initially entered the U.S. legally in July 2005, but subsequently failed to depart under the terms of his nonimmigrant visa and he became unlawfully present in the U.S. when his visa expired in July 2006. In addition to being in violation of federal immigration law, Mr. Abraham-Joseph was convicted on felony drug charges in October 2014 in Fulton County, Georgia,” Cox explained in a statement.

“Mr. Abraham-Joseph is presently in ICE custody in Georgia and has been placed into removal proceedings before the federal immigration courts,” the statement concluded. “ICE will now await the outcome of his case before a federal immigration judge to determine future actions.”

News of 21 Savage’s British citizenship shocked fans and sparked a barrage of reaction on Twitter where the memes were launched which Lovato cited. But the “Confident” singer, who recently completed a rehab stay for drug addiction, was raked over the coals for reacting to the memes by many who thought she was mocking the arrest of 21 Savage.

Rappers Wale and Offset called out the former Disney star, pointing to her own recent troubles.

“ALL THE MEMES AND S—T AINT FUNNY WHEN SOMEBODY GOING THROUGH SOME PRAYING FOR MY DAWG AINT S—T FUNNY HIS FANILY [sic] DEPENDING ON HIM,” Migos rapper Offset wrote.

Lovato attempted to defend herself while seeking to clarify the comments she made.

“If you’re gonna come at me for making a joke, try coming at me with something original not involving drugs,” she said, according to E News.

“FYI this is the s–t I’m laughing at…not the fact that anyone is getting deported,” Lovato wrote, citing the tweet that featured an image of someone writing with a quill pen and captioned, “This how 21 Savage be writing his verses.”

Though Lovato’s Twitter went dark, she did continue to comment on Instagram where she shared screenshots of some of the hateful comments from people following her tweet.

“Wasn’t laughing at anyone getting deported. I know that’s not a joke…not have I EVER laughed at that,” she wrote, according to E News. “The meme I posted/was talking about was of him being writing with a feather pen. Sorry if I offended anyone.”

“But it’s no excuse to laugh at someone’s addiction, let alone their OD,” she added.
