A New Jersey man’s plan to fraudulently file an insurance claim was thwarted by a simple fact he overlooked.
The 57-year-old Randolph man staged the entire ‘accident’ at his workplace to collect the insurance money but did not take into account that security cameras caught every step – and fall.
The man, who was subcontracted to work at a Woodbridge company where the alleged fake fall happened in 2018 according to prosecutors, was arrested last month, the New York Post reported.
Surveillance video captured the stages of the deception as the man could be seen getting ice from a dispenser in the cafeteria and then throwing it on the floor. He then assessed how to position himself on the floor for a moment before lying down.
The man, identified as Alexander Goldinsky by WPIX-TV, then allegedly waited to be found, according to authorities, subsequently filing an insurance claim for hospital treatment.
Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey plans to “aggressively prosecute” Goldinsky for the “fake slip and fall.”
“Fraudulent claims cost everyone and we will aggressively prosecute those who illegally manipulate the system,” Carey said, according to WPIX.
Goldinsky was arrested January 15 and charged with insurance fraud in the third degree and theft by deception in the third degree. He is scheduled to appear in court Feb. 7, according to WPIX.
Twitter users agreed that, though staged insurance fraud is not so uncommon, the video provided an appreciated moment of hilarity on social media.
