Newly empowered Nancy Pelosi goes on Twitter rant, asks ‘What does Putin have on Trump?’

Hours after President Donald Trump announced that he would end the government shutdown in hopes the Democrats might negotiate “in good faith” on border wall funding, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi thanked him by accusing him of being blackmailed by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

In both a formal statement and Twitter comments published Friday evening, the congressional Democrat leader essentially claimed without evidence that the indictment and arrest that morning of the president’s former campaign adviser Roger Stone proves the dubious Russian collusion narrative.

“The indictment of Roger Stone makes clear that there was a deliberate, coordinated attempt by top Trump campaign officials to influence the 2016 election and subvert the will of the American people,” she said. “It is staggering that the President has chosen to surround himself with people who violated the integrity of our democracy and lied to the FBI and Congress about it.”

“In the face of 37 indictments, the President’s continued actions to undermine the Special Counsel investigation raise the questions: what does Putin have on the President, politically, personally or financially? Why has the Trump Administration continued to discuss pulling the U.S. out of NATO, which would be a massive victory for Putin?”

As usual, nothing Pelosi said comported with the facts.

Stone was arrested Friday morning after being indicted on seven counts, including obstruction, making false statements and witness tampering, but not including Russian collusion.

As “Fox & Friends” co-host Steve Doocy rightly noted later that morning, “When you look at these seven counts from the grand jury: Obstruction of an official investigation, false statements to Congress, and perhaps witness tampering, once again, where is the Russia collusion?”

There was none. The crimes Stone has been accused of committing are all process crimes.

“These are process crimes. The indictment of Roger Stone only shows today that Mueller has failed to meet his mandate. No one has been charged with a crime for which Mueller was appointed,” Fox News commentator Gregg Jarrett noted later in the evening on “Hannity.”

He reiterated this in a Fox News column, writing, “Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been investigating allegations since May 2017 that Donald Trump or people on his presidential campaign may have worked with Russia to win the 2016 election.”

“There’s no question that if Mueller believed he had proof of such activity the special counsel would have charged Stone with some collusion-related offense involving a conspiracy,” he continued, adding that Stone wasn’t charged Friday with collusion. “In fact, not a single person has been charged with the alleged crime Mueller was appointed to investigate.”

Not one. So again, where is the mysterious “Russian collusion” that Pelosi surreptitiously referenced in her statement? Where is the evidence — any evidence — of Trump’s ties to Putin?

According to Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York, all that Stone’s indictment proved is that the guy is a “BS artist” with a habit of telling tall tales.

“The main thing to remember reading this indictment is, Roger Stone has always been a kind of a BS artist. He brags about all sort of dirty deeds, some of which he hasn’t even done, and he was doing that in connection to this case in public,” York said Friday afternoon to Fox host Brett Baier.

“And then the House had him come for an interview and asked him about those statements under oath and he allegedly lied about it all and it has all kind of caught up with him. But as far as revealing some sort of scheme or conspiracy, it just doesn’t do it.”

Moreover, what does the president’s desire to force other NATO members to pay their fair share have to do with Russia? And is Pelosi aware of how tough Trump has been on Russia?

Last year he provided the Ukrainian government with $200 million so that its military could shore up the nation’s defenses and more easily protect itself from Russian aggression.

And that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

“The president has continued sanctions on Russia’s malicious cyber activity in response to election hacking. We’ve expelled 60 Russian operatives from the United States and closed two consulates. President Trump issued four statements condemning Russia’s poisoning of U.K. citizens on U.K. soil,” White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders noted last summer.

Listen:

While some certainly bought Pelosi’s outrageous accusations hook, line and sinker, as evidenced by the likes her tweets received, plenty found them — and her, in fact — to be delusional.
