Gutfeld: We’re making a mistake by laughing, turning Ocasio-Cortez into Dems’ Trump. Ask Joe and Mika.

Fox News’ Greg Gutfeld offered a sober warning after musing on similarities in media reaction to Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and President Donald Trump.

Gutfeld discussed recent comments by the New York Democratic socialist on billionaires and climate change during an exchange with his co-hosts on Fox News’ “The Five” on Tuesday.

Jesse Watters remarked that the freshman lawmaker “continues to be the darling of the left” despite coming under fire for her recent jab at capitalism and for her “dire prediction” about climate change in which she said “the world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change.”

Established Democrats who have been increasingly unhappy with the antics of the 29-year-old with more than 2 million Twitter followers, were told how little she cared about their opinions in a recent appearance on CBS’s “Late Show”

Gutfeld reacted to Ocasio-Cortez’s climate change remarks by noting how she was using fear to make her point – something the Fox News host said the president has also sometimes done effectively.

“She’s doing two things right: She is capitalizing on a fear, which in this case she’s talking about climate change,” Gutfeld said.

“You could say Donald Trump did the same thing with immigration. Some say legitimate fear, some say not legitimate. Climate change – some say legitimate and some say not, but she’s doing the same thing,” he continued.

“Within the climate change argument, she is working on exaggeration, tertiary sources, secondary sources, but so did Donald Trump. She’s also doing something Donald Trump is doing: Saying memorable things that are, in her world,  directionally true. They might be completely inaccurate but directionally true,” Gutfeld argued.

Ocasio-Cortez unleashed in a Twitter rant earlier this month over getting fact-checked by the likes of The Washington Post and PolitiFact.

“That’s why she gets the applause. The world could end in 12 years –  obviously that’s wrong. But in their heads, they’re going ‘her mind is going in the right direction,'” Gutfeld added.

He warned that as the media has chosen to sometimes mock the progressive lawmaker, they could be setting up a path of no return.

“We can mock her for all of this, but we are guilty of what everybody else did with Trump, on “Morning Joe,” on CNN, which is laugh, laugh, laugh until you’ve built her up to a certain stature that you can’t laugh at her anymore,” Gutfeld explained, noting a potential reason her Democratic colleagues are “upset” with the freshman congresswoman who “just showed up” but is basking in media attention and interviews.

“What does that sound like?” Gutfeld asked.  “Sounds like the Republican Party with Trump. It’s becoming an identical mirror.”
