CNN counter-terror analyst Phil Mudd trashed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s rationale for thwarting President Donald Trump even while he praised her political ploys.
The former deputy director of the CIA’s Counterterrorist Center and the FBI’s National Security Branch refuted Pelosi’s claims of national security risks in moving ahead with Trump’s State of the Union address scheduled for Jan. 29.
“Do you believe that this is a real national security threat?” CNN’s Wolf Blitzer asked on “The Situation Room” Wednesday.
“You’re gonna have all one hundred Senators, 435 members of the House, the diplomatic core, the Supreme Court justices,” Blitzer added, noting important government officials who would be in attendance. “Is this a legitimate security concern?”
“Heck no!” Mudd exclaimed. “I mean this is political genius, I give Nancy Pelosi credit for her political sense.”
The California Democrat sent Trump a letter on Wednesday requesting he delay the State of the Union until after the partial government shutdown ends or else submit his speech in writing instead.
Pelosi’s warned about security at the event because the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security “have not been funded for 26 days now – with critical departments hamstrung by furloughs.” But her claims were debunked by senior law enforcement officials and even Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen who assured her that the agencies are “fully prepared” to handle the event as planned.
“It’s national security nonsense!” Mudd told the CNN panel Wednesday.
“We’re talking about less than 60 acres in the huge national security threats of U.S. Senators, U.S. congressmen, members of the cabinet, Supreme Court justices, and guests of, for example, the president, and we can’t secure 58 acres?” he asked. “Are you kidding me?”
“There’s 48,000 plus flights every day in this country, Wolf,” Mudd continued, “they’re still flying and the FAA, which in the midst of this crisis is still operating, can manage 40,000 plus flights and we can’t do 58 acres?”
The counterterrorism expert tore into Pelosi’s claims all while giving her kudos for the political maneuvering on behalf of Democrats.
“I applaud her for coming up with the genius of trying to corner the president on this,” Mudd concluded, “but from a national security perspective, this is a Kardashian moment, this is fake!”
Later, Rep. Mark Meadows called out Pelosi and the Dem Party for the SOTU political stunt, saying they are fully prepared with ample security:
Homeland Security and Secret Service say they're fully prepared to secure the State of the Union.
Let's call Speaker Pelosi's cancelation what it is. The Democrat party continues to move left supporting open borders–and they want to avoid being exposed for it.
