The anti-Trump media are back on their Russian narrative with a vengeance, convinced that President Donald Trump is little more than a KGB agent doing the bidding of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
With the New York Times reporting the FBI opened an investigation into whether the president was an agent of the Russian government, and the Washington Post claiming Trump tried to hide conversations he had with Putin from senior officials in his own administration, journalist Carl Bernstein appeared on “Reliable Sources” to suggest that Trump is a “half-witting pawn” of Putin’s.
Seriously.
Never mind that the president has every right to meet privately with world leaders if he chooses, being elected commander in chief by the American people — the issue boiling down to trust, or in the case of his critics, a lack thereof.
No one caused much of a stir when former President Ronald Reagan did so for hours with then Russian President Mikhail Gorbachev.

Mr. Reagan and Mr. Gorbachev began their second day of talks with a private meeting that had been scheduled to last 15 minutes but ran for nearly 70 minutes, with only interpreters present. They met in a small room in the Soviet Mission, with the Soviet leader seated in a small armchair and Mr. Reagan on a sofa.
In the afternoon, they meet alone for a little over 20 minutes and then again for 90 minutes. All told, the two leaders have spent 4 hours and 51 minutes alone, except for interpreters, over the two days here.
“That’s nonsense,” Bernstein said of Trump’s claim that there is no “smoking gun” on the collusion claim.
“This is about the most serious counterintelligence people we have in the U.S. government saying, ‘Oh, my God, the president’s words and actions lead us to conclude that somehow he has become a witting, unwitting, or half-witting pawn, certainly in some regards, to Vladimir Putin,’” Bernstein said.
Serious-minded people like former CIA Director John Brennan, now a CNN contributor who spends his days spewing Trump hate? Or former FBI director James Comey, who advocates online for Americans to vote Democratic? Perhaps he’s thinking of disgraced former FBI agents and secret lovers, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page?
The accusations being leveled against Trump daily on national TV knows no bounds, particularly on CNN, which all but dedicates 24/7 coverage to destroying the president, and Bernstein did his part as he claimed Trump “has done what appears to be Putin’s goals.”
“He has helped Putin destabilize the United States and interfere in the election, no matter whether it was purposeful or not,” the 74-year-old journalist said.
Never mind that the accusation walks all over the line between fact and opinion.
He also intimated he is on the receiving end of leaks from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team when he added, “And that is part of what the draft of Mueller’s report, I’m told, is to be about.”
“What the hell happened in Helsinki!?” Bernstein asked ask. “Why is he so beholden?”
This being a reference to Trump meeting one-on-one with Putin for two hours in Helsinki in July with just translators in the room.
The whole production is part of an ongoing effort to portray Trump as unstable, a danger to national security. A scandalous effort that takes on added significance with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg missing substantial time from the bench as she recovers from surgery for early-stage lung cancer.
“Is Donald Trump fit to be the president of the United States,” Berstein asked.
“There’s a question of competence,” he added. “We do not have an effective governance from the White House right now. We have chaos, misinformation, disinformation, lying.”
As for the Russian agent angle of the campaign, it’s all so confusing.
Comedian Dennis Miller nailed it in a tweet Saturday that asked exactly when did Donald Trump “flip.”
“All right, I’m getting into this late because I thought it was a joke. Do Dems believe Trump was born in Russia and sent here or did they flip him here as a teen in military school or did he flip himself at age 70 because the Communist light bulb went off?”
