During his radio program this week, conservative commentator Rush Limbaugh noticed something unusual about the ongoing border wall/shutdown fight debate: a lack of polls.
He specifically noted that no meaningful polls were published after President Donald Trump delivered an Oval Office address Tuesday in which he explained the ongoing battles to the public and implored Democrat to end them by agreeing to secure the southern U.S. border.
“There has been no polling data that we could find anywhere following Trump’s speech,” Limbaugh said Friday. “There weren’t any Frank Luntz focus groups with any undecideds out there.”
“They didn’t gather any Trump voters in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Wisconsin, and ask them if they’re still behind Trump. The media didn’t do any of the stuff they usually do. We have no idea what the valued and very wise independents thought of Trump’s speech.”

Correct. While the media ran polls prior to the president’s address, no polls appeared to be published afterward. In some cases, the media made dubious conclusions about the address without citing any factual evidence whatsoever.
“Did Trump’s Oval Office address change anything?” reads the headline of a piece from The Washington Post that the writer admits was written “approximately an hour before” the address.
Or at least the beginning part was written prior to the address. Toward the end, the writer included a post-address conclusion that the president’s address was “dreadful” and would change nothing. But no post-address polls were provided to back this unsubstantiated thesis.
Why is that? According to Limbaugh, it’s possible it’s because the polling data didn’t match their expectations: “I’m sure they [the media] did, in a flash way, sample public opinion [via polls]. [But] They didn’t get the negative reaction to Trump they hoped for.”
And so they neglected to report the polls. As possible proof of this thesis, the conservative radio show host pointed to an unexpected revelation unveiled by the president’s 2020 campaign manager, Brad Parscale during an interview Thursday.
Speaking with Fox News host Martha MacCallum, Parscale claimed that internal campaign polling data shows the president’s currently enjoying some of the highest numbers of his political career.
“[W]atching the data, you know, I started to see this rise as he started making this fight. And I’m not surprised by it. Because if you go back and you look, you look at the people that are kind of these swing voters, these people who possibly don’t like him for personality or different reasons, the No. 1 reason they will vote for him is because of his stance on border security,” he explained.

“Bingo,” Limbaugh said Friday of what Parscale had said.
“So here you have the Trump campaign manager saying that their data … shows Trump’s at his highest level since this fight began. It makes perfect sense why the Drive-By Media would not be reporting a single public opinion reaction to Trump’s Oval Office speech or even on the subject,” he noted.
Also true. Just this week CNN asked a San Diego news station to speak with local U.S. Border Patrol agents to see how they felt about the president’s desired border wall. When the station informed CNN that the agents they’d spoken to supported it, CNN dropped the story.
“The public polling data that we do have is 93% of the American people think it’s a major problem; 70% of the people support a national emergency declaration to solve this,” Limbaugh added.
He seems to believe that support for the president may have spiked following his Oval Office address. Why? Because the address allowed the president to bypass the media’s oftentimes false narratives explain the ongoing border wall/shutdown fight debate directly to the American people.
But he likewise believes the media has purposefully to not share these alleged results with the public because they’d hurt their narrative. Limbaugh isn’t the only one who suspects this may be the case:

“Do any of you have the sense that President Trump is winning this shutdown battle with Chuck and Nancy?” Limbaugh said Friday in conclusion. “I do. I have the sense that he’s winning this thing big time. By winning it big time I’m talking about with the American people. And I think Chuck and Nancy and the Democrats are beginning to look the way we see them to a lot of people.”
