‘True leader’: Gaetz reveals private convo with Trump when asked if he could win 2020 without border wall

Rep. Matt Gaetz lauded President Donald Trump’s resolve to fulfill his campaign promises to voters and deliver on the border wall, even if it affects his 2020 reelection.

Speaking on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on Fox Business Network Wednesday, the Florida Republican discussed the president’s fight for funding the security wall along the southern U.S. border as a partial government shutdown drags into its third week.

With Trump threatening to declare a national emergency if needed to secure the border with the wall, host Lou Dobbs asked Gaetz, “It is a crisis and there could be no national disputation of that, could there?”

The Florida lawmaker responded with a question of his own.

“You usually ask the questions, but let me ask you one: should Donald Trump be reelected in 2020 if he is not standing in front of a border security wall?” Gaetz asked.

“I would put it this way – there are some fights that are worth having. This is a fight that is worth having, because the future of the country depends on it,” Dobbs replied. “I would say this: If this president is not reelected as a result of his insistence on a secure nation, a sovereign nation and providing for the safety of the American people, then we’ve lost a nation.  And it will be a shameful, shameful outcome were he not to be reelected.”

Gaetz then noted that though he doesn’t usually share the “specifics” of his conversations with the president but said he was reminded of a recent discussion with Trump when he reportedly said, “I’m gonna fight with everything I have for the forgotten Americans who want a secure border, and if I don’t get it, I’m gonna die with my boots on.”

The congressman praised the president’s “resolve” and his commitment to his word.

“That’s the kind of resolve that I want from the energetic executive that we have at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Someone who is willing to do everything he can to make sure that the American people see promises fulfilled,” Gaetz said.

“A lot of politicians want to make promises in elections and then abandon them,” he added. “This president actually intends on keeping his promises.”

Trump walked out of a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House Wednesday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to give in to his request for funding the border wall.

“I said bye-bye,” Trump tweeted after the showdown.

Despite the rhetoric from the left, many support the president’s strong stand and especially his commitment to keeping campaign promises.

Conservative actor James Woods called Trump a “true leader” for putting national security ahead of his reelection in a tweet Wednesday.

Many others agreed.
