Rep. Matt Gaetz lauded President Donald Trump’s resolve to fulfill his campaign promises to voters and deliver on the border wall, even if it affects his 2020 reelection.
Speaking on “Lou Dobbs Tonight” on Fox Business Network Wednesday, the Florida Republican discussed the president’s fight for funding the security wall along the southern U.S. border as a partial government shutdown drags into its third week.
With Trump threatening to declare a national emergency if needed to secure the border with the wall, host Lou Dobbs asked Gaetz, “It is a crisis and there could be no national disputation of that, could there?”
The Florida lawmaker responded with a question of his own.
“You usually ask the questions, but let me ask you one: should Donald Trump be reelected in 2020 if he is not standing in front of a border security wall?” Gaetz asked.
“I would put it this way – there are some fights that are worth having. This is a fight that is worth having, because the future of the country depends on it,” Dobbs replied. “I would say this: If this president is not reelected as a result of his insistence on a secure nation, a sovereign nation and providing for the safety of the American people, then we’ve lost a nation. And it will be a shameful, shameful outcome were he not to be reelected.”
Gaetz then noted that though he doesn’t usually share the “specifics” of his conversations with the president but said he was reminded of a recent discussion with Trump when he reportedly said, “I’m gonna fight with everything I have for the forgotten Americans who want a secure border, and if I don’t get it, I’m gonna die with my boots on.”
The congressman praised the president’s “resolve” and his commitment to his word.
“That’s the kind of resolve that I want from the energetic executive that we have at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Someone who is willing to do everything he can to make sure that the American people see promises fulfilled,” Gaetz said.
“A lot of politicians want to make promises in elections and then abandon them,” he added. “This president actually intends on keeping his promises.”
Trump walked out of a meeting with congressional leaders at the White House Wednesday after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refused to give in to his request for funding the border wall.
“I said bye-bye,” Trump tweeted after the showdown.
Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time. I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!

Despite the rhetoric from the left, many support the president’s strong stand and especially his commitment to keeping campaign promises.
Conservative actor James Woods called Trump a “true leader” for putting national security ahead of his reelection in a tweet Wednesday.
He doesn’t even care if he’s not re-elected. He’s going to fulfill his campaign promises at any cost. A true leader. pic.twitter.com/KSn9sBkgUK

Many others agreed.
When practically every other elected official is only concerned with getting reelected.

Which is why he ran, against the odds, to make this a better country. Still not a politician.

President @realDonaldTrump has set an extremely high bar for any future presidents to try to follow. He’s the best one we’re ever had.

Trump not being reelected will be an American tragedy.

God bless Trump. He’s got a backbone.

That’s the difference. Politicians are in for life. 90% of their job is trying to be re-elected. Thats not the way the founders intended things. Serve and get out. #termlimits

That’s what the swamp doesn’t understand – President Trump doesn’t NEED the job, he does it because he’s called for a purpose. #MAGA

He stands by his promise and that’s what we want to hear. It’s what we want him to do. It’s why we voted for him. He’s got guts!

It has been understood that campaign promises were mostly just talk to win an election. How refreshing to have elected someone who believes and fights for what he told us he would do. MAGA!
