Fmr Israeli mayor: In first year after wall was built, illegal entry into Israel was cut almost to nothing

David Rubin, a former mayor in Israel, backed President Donald Trump’s repeated claims that walls work.

Rubin pointed to the effectiveness of walls used in his own country in a Fox News interview focused on the president’s argument that walls are effective around the globe.

“If you really want to find out how effective a wall is, just ask Israel – 99.9 percent effective,” Trump said last month from the White House.

“Well, if you want to understand whether walls work, Israel is a tremendous example,” Rubin, the author and former mayor of Shiloh, which is in the area known as the West Bank, said on “Fox & Friends” Sunday, noting the nation has had two different types of walls built.

Rubin, who along with his three-year-old son were wounded in a terrorist attack in Israel, explained that there were over 1,000 people killed in terrorist attacks in his nation in the mountainous West Bank region in Judea and Samaria, north and south of Jerusalem, between 2000 and 2005.

“The terrorism was so intense and every day people didn’t know if they were going to be able to get to work or the children were going to get to school. It was a terrible situation,” he said.

“Israel’s government decided to build a wall separating the major cities of Israel from Samaria and Judea,” he continued, describing that was as part concrete but “most of it from very, very strong steel” as well as having a high wall, barbed wire “as well as high-tech measures.”

“It was very, very effective it cut down on terrorism in Israel’s cities by 95 percent even, so it was very very effective,” Rubin said. “And to this day we don’t have major terrorist attacks in the big cities in Israel.”

At the southern border, however, separating Egypt and Israel, the problem was one of illegal immigration, Rubin noted, not terrorism.

“But the illegal immigration was causing a lot of crime and 55,000 immigrants came in from the southern border between the years 2000 and 2012,” Rubin said.

Israel then constructed a wall which Rubin noted was “mostly fence but a physical barrier, a very strong physical barrier on the entire southern border.”

“And in the first year that it was built the entry, the illegal entry into Israel was cut down almost to nothing,” he noted. “And the year after, they raised the level and it was cut completely.”

Fox News host Pete Hegseth summed up Rubin’s explanation, saying “whether it’s terrorism or illegal immigration, America’s got a lot to learn” from Israel.
