Brit Hume says Trump’s ‘in the process of blowing up’ conservative base. Is he missing a sea change?

In the end, it’s likely to come down to who has a better feel for his base, President Donald Trump or the hawkish pundits on the right.

Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume is looked to as a reasoned conservative voice and has been willing to praise President Trump when warranted, but he does not agree with the decision to withdraw troops from Syria — or the way the president went about it.

“Too much of the criticism of Trump has been overblown, too often about things that either didn’t happen or didn’t matter,” Hume tweeted Sunday. “That is not true of Syria/Mattis. This is a big deal, both in the substance of the Trump decisions and the way the whole episode was handled.”

The idea that Trump is following through on a campaign promise to get the US out of “endless wars” in the Middle East isn’t sitting too well with the more militant faction of the Republican Party, but there are many on the right who agree with the president.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’RE MISSING …

But Hume apparently sees all conservatives as hawks — see neo-cons — suggesting in a tweet Monday that Trump is “in the process of blowing up” that part of his base, offering the commentary as he linked to an op-ed in the Washington Examiner, titled “Trump forgets his base is populists and conservatives.”

“And he’s in the process of blowing up the conservative part of it. I wonder if he understands,” tweeted Hume.

It can be argued that Trump was on the verge of forgetting his conservative base when he considered signing a stopgap spending bill that did not include money for a border wall.

Many on the right who have grown weary of watching the cowardly Republican Party yield time after time to Democrats expected Trump to hold firm and, if necessary, shut the government down until he gets the money — there was plenty of pushback on social media to this effect.

What’s clear to many is that Trump’s in this fight alone, with little help from the GOP. It’s also clear that as an outsider, the political class, which encompasses both parties, and the media are set on standing in his way of bringing change to Washington.

HERE’S WHAT YOU’RE MISSING …

Trump is the most determined reformer this country has seen since Ronald Reagan… and may very well be the last we see for some time.

And the president understands that he’s not going to get a fair shake from the so-called media experts.

“If anybody but your favorite President, Donald J. Trump, announced that, after decimating ISIS in Syria, we were going to bring our troops back home (happy & healthy), that person would be the most popular hero in America. With me, hit hard instead by the Fake News Media. Crazy!” he tweeted over the weekend.

The reaction on social media suggested that the experts who have been dragging us into one foreign conflict after another may be missing a sea change afoot in the conservative movement.
