In the end, it’s likely to come down to who has a better feel for his base, President Donald Trump or the hawkish pundits on the right.
Fox News senior political analyst Brit Hume is looked to as a reasoned conservative voice and has been willing to praise President Trump when warranted, but he does not agree with the decision to withdraw troops from Syria — or the way the president went about it.
“Too much of the criticism of Trump has been overblown, too often about things that either didn’t happen or didn’t matter,” Hume tweeted Sunday. “That is not true of Syria/Mattis. This is a big deal, both in the substance of the Trump decisions and the way the whole episode was handled.”

The idea that Trump is following through on a campaign promise to get the US out of “endless wars” in the Middle East isn’t sitting too well with the more militant faction of the Republican Party, but there are many on the right who agree with the president.
But Hume apparently sees all conservatives as hawks — see neo-cons — suggesting in a tweet Monday that Trump is “in the process of blowing up” that part of his base, offering the commentary as he linked to an op-ed in the Washington Examiner, titled “Trump forgets his base is populists and conservatives.”
“And he’s in the process of blowing up the conservative part of it. I wonder if he understands,” tweeted Hume.

It can be argued that Trump was on the verge of forgetting his conservative base when he considered signing a stopgap spending bill that did not include money for a border wall.
Many on the right who have grown weary of watching the cowardly Republican Party yield time after time to Democrats expected Trump to hold firm and, if necessary, shut the government down until he gets the money — there was plenty of pushback on social media to this effect.
What’s clear to many is that Trump’s in this fight alone, with little help from the GOP. It’s also clear that as an outsider, the political class, which encompasses both parties, and the media are set on standing in his way of bringing change to Washington.
Trump is the most determined reformer this country has seen since Ronald Reagan… and may very well be the last we see for some time.
And the president understands that he’s not going to get a fair shake from the so-called media experts.
“If anybody but your favorite President, Donald J. Trump, announced that, after decimating ISIS in Syria, we were going to bring our troops back home (happy & healthy), that person would be the most popular hero in America. With me, hit hard instead by the Fake News Media. Crazy!” he tweeted over the weekend.

The reaction on social media suggested that the experts who have been dragging us into one foreign conflict after another may be missing a sea change afoot in the conservative movement.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
what Brit and Salena mean by “conservative” is neo-conservative also known as #neverTrump, the exact thing we all voted against and the only people that hate Trump more than the democrats. ?
Will the experts and smart people EVER get it?

The “experts” and “smart people” will never get it.

@SalenaZito doesn’t understand why many of us voted for @realDonaldTrump . Unborn babies and #2A are VERY IMPORTANT to us and we don’t want endless foreign entanglements. We’re tired of being taken advantage of by the rest of the world.

Didn’t realize the Republican Party was just a bunch of war mongers with no political spine when I come over to vote for Trump. Now I’ll have to go buy some weed and join the Libertarians!

You belt way elites don’t get it. Obviously ( after yesterday’s show) Wallace out in front of the pack. Full transparency around the entrenched establishment, honoring commitments made to base is all the more important now in order to battle the populist surge from left

But conservatives would love for him to drop the populist elements, like trade. And many conservatives are now tired of endless deployments. Keeping a populist-conservative coalition together requires a lot of thought and care – and compromise.

Wrong. Republicans have forgotten what it means to be conservative. “The very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism” – Ronald Reagan.
