Call it bad timing, karma or just plain stupidity, but one way or another two Michigan women got their just rewards after going on a shoplifting expedition at a Target during a “Shop with a Cop” event.
Keiana Wilson, 40, and Dana Johnson, 18, were arrested for allegedly stealing almost $2,000 worth of electronics, and now face “felony retail fraud charges,” according to ABC affiliate WXYZ.
The criminal masterminds engaged in their crime spree while there were 15 cops from various local departments taking part in an annual charity event organized to aid underprivileged kids during the Christmas season.
The women reportedly knew the officers were in the store, according to the Detroit Free Press, which reported that Johnson approached one and complimented him on about “how generous the cops were with their time.”
Shortly thereafter, the women allegedly tried to walk out with a cart full of goodies without paying — but they didn’t get very far.
“The loss prevention (officers) actually apprehended them, then they asked for police assistance,” said Sylvan Lake Police Sgt. Michael Mondeau, who organized the Shop with a Cop event. “The police officers were only about 20 feet away when they tried to walk out of the store.”
Bond was set at $250,000 for Johnson and $20,000 for Wilson. To the surprise of no one, the women requested court-appointed — see taxpayer-funded — attorneys.
Not only do the women now face criminal charges, which is old hat for Johnson, who has a lengthy criminal record, but they also faced unmerciful, albeit it justified, scorn on social media.
