Florida Dem Party continued to fund-raise off Bill Nelson’s failed recount effort, lying to donors

With the Florida media beginning to write the epitaph on Sen. Bill Nelson’s career as the recount math begins to work against the lawmaker retaining his seat, the Florida Democratic Party reportedly continued to fund raise off his dismal chances.

Citing a “top Democrat” source,  Politico reported on Friday the party realizes Nelson is “done” — as in stick-a-fork-in-him done:

“It’s done. But it was done before today. This was a total Hail Mary,” said a top Democrat involved in Nelson’s campaign who didn’t want to speak publicly before the Democratic Party icon conceded defeat to one of the party’s most-hated rivals.

With Republican Gov. Rick Scott’s victory last Tuesday over Nelson holding up — despite the best efforts of Broward and Palm Beach Cos. — Politico said the Florida Democratic Party was effectively deceiving donors that the incumbent still had a chance.

As highlighted online by Instapundit, the Politico article reported: “While party officials refused to discuss the hopelessness of the situation on the record, the Florida Democratic Party on Friday continued to fundraise off the recount, suggesting to donors that Nelson had a shot when his own top backers knew he didn’t.”

Led by the likes of Sens. Diane Feinstein and Kamala Harris, and Rep. Maxine Waters, today’s Democratic Party may be called many things, but “principled” isn’t likely to be one of them.

In fact, the Florida Democratic Party is facing questions over an altered election form sent to voters as part of an effort to resolve signature issues with absentee ballots after a state deadline.

Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter suggesting this latest development comes as no surprise to those paying attention:
