Pete Hegseth rips Macron for stomping Trump’s ‘nationalist’ remark: ‘So, we saved your a**. And you’re going to preach to us’

Fox News contributor Pete Hegseth ripped French President Emmanuel Macron for taking a jab Sunday at President Donald Trump, who used the term “nationalist” to define his love for America.

Speaking at a ceremony near the Arc de Triomphe marking the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I, Macron conflated nationalist with nationalism in its extreme, as was seen in Nazi Germany, calling it “a betrayal of patriotism.”

And that did not sit well with Hegseth.

“It’s typical European arrogance. It really is,” he said. “So we saved your ass. And then you’re going to preach to us?”

“No really, that’s how Americans look at this. Twice we did,” Hegseth added. “And you’re going to turn around and preach to us because we love our country, we love our flags, we love our military, we love our cops, we love our Second Amendment. That we really believe in our First Amendment that somehow we’re the fascists? We’re the nationalists?”

A broader context of Macron’s remarks that were a clear denunciation of Trump’s “America First” stance can be seen below:

“Patriotism is the exact opposite of nationalism,” the French president said, according to the closed captioning. “Nationalism is a betrayal of patriotism. By saying our interests first, who cares about the others, we erase what a nation holds dearest, what gives it life, what makes it great and what is essential: its moral values.”

“I know there are old demons which are coming back to the surface. They are ready to wreak chaos and death,” Macron added. “History sometimes threatens to take its sinister course once again.”

President Trump had an opportunity to respond to Macron’s rebuke when he spoke at an American cemetery outside of Paris but took the high road, keeping the focus on those who died in the two conflicts, NBC News reported.

He also thanked Macron on Twitter.

“Beautiful ceremony today in Paris commemorating the end of World War One. Many World leaders in attendance. Thank you to @EmmanuelMacron, President of France! Now off to Suresnes American Cemetery to make speech in honor of our great heroes! Then back to the U.S.A.” he tweeted.
