Hulu, the subscription TV service that served up “Handmaid’s Tale,” tried to promote itself with a “reminder” to wear “culturally appropriate and respectful” costumes this Halloween.
The tweet came complete with a #Huluween hashtag.
“If you’re dressing up for #Huluween this year, this is your reminder to wear a costume that is culturally appropriate and respectful to others. Let’s celebrate the holiday in a way that we can all enjoy,” the tweet read.
Is this Handmaid’s Tale costume appropriate? My friend and I want to wear it for our podcast @Femsplainers on #Huluween. 🎃 pic.twitter.com/kAPWGQfXnu

The ill-advised PSA resulted in Hulu being mocked unmercifully online. So much so that they deleted the tweet.

As for the ridicule, there were two common themes with social media user, telling Hulu to “stay in your lane” and a timely call of attention to the mother of all cultural appropriation, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass.
Here’s a sampling of responses from Twitter:
trying to imagine the smarmy mouse who tweeted this.

Is it more insulting to dress up as a Native American or for a prestigious University to use “a woman of color” who used the University, but turned out to be whiter than Casper the Ghost?

I’m going to dress up as an annoying entertainment platform that tells people what to do as opposed to just sticking to what I know-providing entertainment. Cool?

Please don’t mock my heritage by calling it #Huluween. Insensitive! https://t.co/mwmCY8HyV5
