Democratic North Dakota Sen. Heidi Heitkamp’s Republican rival called her Thursday announcement that she will vote against confirming Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh the “greatest political gift.”
“That spectacle proved to be perhaps the greatest political gift I’ve been given in a very long time,” Republican candidate Kevin Cramer said, according to a Friday Fox News story.
The North Dakota congressman is up by 12 points according to a Fox News poll. Real Clear Politics ranks Cramer nearly nine points above Heitkamp, and Roll Call declared her the most vulnerable senator Thursday.
Roughly one-third of North Dakota voters said this week that they were “less likely” to re-elect Heitkamp if she was a no on Kavanaugh, reported Fox News. Trump won her state by nearly 40 points, reported CNBC.
“The process has been bad but at the end of the day you have to make a decision and I’ve made that decision,” she told North Dakota’s WDAY ABC Thursday. “I will be voting no on Judge Kavanaugh.”
Now all eyes are on West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, the lone Democrat who might vote to confirm Kavanaugh. Manchin is another vulnerable senator up for reelection this November.
