A Seattle woman was inspired to out her alleged sexual abuser after she observed Christine Blasey Ford testify to the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.
“Today I watched as Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Supreme Court Nominee Brett Kavanaugh testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee,” accuser Candace Faber wrote on Medium that afternoon. “Like many survivors, I was inspired by Dr. Ford’s courage.”
“That is why I chose to name my rapist on Twitter: Joe Fain. He currently serves as a Senator in the Washington State Legislature. I did this without professional legal counsel. It was a decision I made in the moment,” she added.
Much like with Ford’s accusation against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, whom she’s claimed without evidence had sexually assaulted her decades ago, Fain’s accusation pertains to events that allegedly transpired years ago.
She specifically claimed in a tweet directed at Fain that he had raped her the night she graduated from Georgetown University in 2007, or 11 years ago.
So okay, let’s do it. @senatorfain, you raped me the night I graduated from Georgetown in 2007. Then you had the audacity to ask me to support your campaign. I’ve been terrified of running into you since moving home and seeing your name everywhere.

Instead of citing any specific details or naming corroborating witnesses, however, Faber used her Medium post to share platitudes about the need for women to speak out against their abusers:
“Like Dr. Ford, I can no longer remain silent knowing that the man who raped me is in a position to influence the laws that govern my state and impact every woman who lives here. I do not believe that survivors have a civic duty to speak out. I believe that we have a civic duty to believe survivors.”
Some argue that evidence should be believed, not mere accusations. In the case of Ford, her opening statement contained a number of startling contradictions. Also notable is that every corroborating witness she’s cited has denied knowing anything about her alleged assault by Kavanaugh.
In a previous essay reportedly published in June, Faber wrote about spending an evening drinking with and kissing an unnamed man “at the Capitol.” She added that after the two returned to the man’s hotel room together, he pinned her down to the bed and raped her.
The response to Faber’s claim on social media was similar to the response to Ford’s claim, in that people were skeptical of her motives, especially in light of the fact that she’d apparently never once contacted the authorities about her alleged abuser.

The last tweet referenced the insane amount of money Ford has acquired through various GoFundMe fundraisers launched in her name, despite Kavanaugh denying any wrongdoing and never being convicted. The same applies to Fain.
“I absolutely deny what Ms. Faber is accusing me of,” he reportedly said in a statement. “Any allegation of this serious nature deserves to be heard and investigated for all parties involved. I invite and will cooperate with any inquiry. I ask everyone to show respect to Ms. Faber and to the process.”
