Gavin Newsom featured in 1st-grade textbook with Abraham Lincoln, MLK. Parents are angry and shocked.

A California school textbook touting Lt. Gov Gavin Newsom as a “champion for people’s rights” has angered parents who are shocked by the “propaganda.”

A suburban school district in Sacramento is under fire for featuring the Democratic Party candidate for governor on a page in a first-grade textbook along with President Abraham Lincoln and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., KTXL-TV reported.

“Sometimes, Gavin helped marry people. Some marriages were not between a man and a woman. He made sure that people’s rights were respected.” the page in the book stated about the former San Francisco mayor who was once married to Kimberly Guilfoyle, former Fox News host and current girlfriend of Donald Trump Jr.

Greg Burt, of the conservative group California Family Council and a parent of a high school student in the Elk Grove Unified School District, said he received a note that “they were testing some new curriculum” in a pilot program for first-graders.

“There was different various heroes we’d typically see in a first-grade class, like Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King. And then there was Gavin Newsom, and I go, ‘Well that’s interesting,'” he told KTXL.

“That’s way over the top,” Burt said of the page featuring Newsom. “It looks like it was written by his campaign staff. And now they’re teaching it to all first-graders.”

A school district spokesperson pushed back at the criticism.

“It’s important not to just look at one page, but to look at the entire book,” Xanthi Pinkerton told the news outlet noting that the book “helps the district stay in compliance with the FAIR Education Act, a state law that requires history and social science books include heroes to minority groups.”

Parents can still voice concerns, Pinkerton said, as the book had not yet been officially selected.

“A lot of work that’s gone into these particular social science materials, that look at all of the groups, ethnic groups, cultural groups, that had previously been underrepresented and now they’re being represented,” she argued.

Pearson Publishing, the book’s publisher, told KTXL that it “takes many steps to ensure our curriculum is accurate, unbiased, and presents a balanced view of the subject matter.”

“The information that’s presented in the book is factual, it’s historically factual,” Pinkerton added, stating that the book was not an endorsement from the school district for Newsom’s race for governor against opponent, Jon Cox.

Burt, however, blasted it as just “propaganda” ahead of the election and criticized the selection for leaving out important facts about the Democratic candidate.

“Technically he was breaking the law and he decided that he didn’t like the law and he was going to violate it,” Burt said.
