CBS’ Alex Wagner flat-out admits to using ‘baseless speculation’ to push Trump collusion theory

CBS News correspondent Alex Wagner admitted to using “baseless speculation” while discussing the Robert Mueller investigation she said on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” Thursday night.

Wagner said Democrats should start thinking about impeaching President Donald Trump if they win the House in the upcoming midterm elections, but Colbert disagreed.

“I think they really shouldn’t do anything about impeachment,” Colbert said. “I don’t think impeaching Donald Trump would actually be very good for the nation. I think he could always say that he was robbed.”

“An election is the proper way to do it,” he added. “Not these sort of extraordinary constitutional measures, but just ordinary voting is the way the do it.”

NBC News national affairs analyst John Heilemann then told Colbert he wouldn’t feel that way if Mueller released a 9/11 style report on Trump’s activities.

“You are not going to say that if Bob Mueller comes forward with a 9/11 commission-size report … full of crimes that he believes Donald Trump would be indicted for if he could be indicted in a court of law. You will very quickly find yourself among other people saying, ‘Yeah, maybe impeachment makes sense.’ Depends on what’s in the report.”

Wagner then jumped in to offer her theories on the Mueller probe and admitted to spouting pure speculation.

“In the interest of completely baseless speculation — It appears that he has a case to be made for obstruction of justice and it appears that he has a case to be made for collusion,” Wagner said. “But nobody can know because the beauty of Robert Mueller is that he has managed to be a lock box in the leakiest, craziest, talkiest moment in American politics.”
