According to the liberal media, the daughter of former first lady Betty Ford has a beef with current first lady Melania Trump for allegedly “dismissing” her mother as a “very traditional first lady.” Only, it’s not quite like that, of course.
The difference in opinion between Trump and Ford’s daughter stems from a benign remark the first lady made to The New York Times almost 20 years ago.
During an interview in 1999, she said that if her then-boyfriend Donald Trump were to ever be elected president, she’d prefer to be a “very traditional first lady. Like Betty Ford or Jackie Kennedy. I would support him.”
She didn’t appear to say the statement with an ounce of disrespect. The media claimed otherwise.

Fast forward to Friday, when People magazine revealed that Ford’s daughter, Susan, views her deceased mother much differently.
“I don’t think of my mother as a traditional first lady to begin with,” she had said. “Yes, she did do teas and things of that nature but I just don’t think of her as a traditional first lady because she was so outspoken about the issues that were important to her.”
She was right. After then-President Richard Nixon’s resignation on Aug. 9, 1974, Ford’s husband, Gerald “Jerry” Ford, automatically became president, thus making her first lady. According to People, she thereafter frequently “spoke out about hot-button issues, from abortion to pre-marital sex to her own addiction to pain medication.”
“She was a trailblazer,” Susan had said, referencing her mother’s feminist attitude toward a variety of issues, including sex. “The running joke is that there were lines of boys standing outside the gates of the White House waiting to date me since my mother said I could have sex.”
What’s interesting is that Ford was one of the first women to buck the trend of being a “traditional” first lady: “The first lady’s role is a very important role, and sometimes I think it gets lost, and I think my mother was one of the beginners of changing that role,” Susan explained to MLive a couple months back.
So, to recap … In 1999 Melania was 29-years-old. She viewed Betty Ford and Jackie Kennedy as supporting their husbands in a traditional FLOTUS role. Now, her 20-year-old quote resurfaces to prove her wrong and misleading headlines follow. Hmm. The day must end in “Y.”
