People are putting their money down on the White House official they believe will eventually be revealed as the author of an anonymous New York Times op-ed published Wednesday.
The odds are different with every bookmaker, but Vice President Mike Pence is a favorite with 2-to-3 odds on MyBookie and 3-to-1 odds on Bovada, reported Fox News.
MyBookie also believes the odds are high that the author is in “the field,” or someone more behind the scenes than the cabinet secretaries and advisers like the president’s daughter Ivanka Trump, reported Fox News.
Pence is favored because of a single word found in the op-ed: “lodestar.”
“What tipped us off was ‘lodestar,’” MyBookie head oddsmaker David Strauss said, according to Fox News. “When you search members of the administration [who have used that word] only one name comes up — and that name is Mike Pence. He’s used in multiple speeches this year.”
Pence has used the word in speeches since 2001, reported the Washington Post.
“The Vice President puts his name on his Op-Eds,” Pence spokesperson Jarrod Agen wrote on Twitter Thursday. “The New York Times should be ashamed and so should the person who wrote the false, illogical, and gutless op-ed. Our office is above such amateur acts.”
Other potential sources include Education Secretary Betsy DeVos at 2-to-1 on MyBookie, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at 4-to-1 and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin at 4-to-1. Senior policy adviser Stephen Miller is at the low end of the betting pool with 15-to-1 odds on MyBookie.
Bovada favors Attorney General Jeff Sessions as the author with 5-to-2 odds and placed the odds that President Donald Trump is the anonymous author at 25-to-1, reported Fox News.
Bovada’s bets are only good “if the Times confirms its source by Dec. 31, 2020,” reported Fox News.
