President Trump jabbed back at the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, saying the liberal CNN commentator is shilling a smear book full of lies and discredited quotes that was conveniently timed to influence the November midterm elections.
Trump tweeted: “The Woodward book has already been refuted and discredited by General (Secretary of Defense) James Mattis and General (Chief of Staff) John Kelly. Their quotes were made-up frauds, a con on the public. Likewise other stories and quotes. Woodward is a Dem operative? Notice timing?”
The president tweeted statements from John Kelly and James Mattis directly refuting the Trump-bashing quotes that Woodward had attributed them in his book, “Fear: Trump in the White House.”
White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also issued a statement denouncing the book: “This book is nothing more than fabricated stories, many by former disgruntled employees, told to make the President look bad.”
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said it’s “sad” that Bob Woodward — once a respected journalist — has joined the anti-Trump liberal media in order to make a quick buck and attack the president.
“I think it’s very sad. I have known Bob Woodward a long time,” Gingrich told Fox News. “He had a chance to do a book that would have been truly interesting.”
Gingrich said instead of examining President Trump’s iconoclastic presidency and how his unique personality is transforming history, Woodward crawled through the gutter to make up sensationalistic lies.
“How can a guy as unique as Donald Trump have created the level of economic growth that we have?” Gingrich asked. “How could he have created the lowest black unemployment rate in American history? How could he have worked with Mitch McConnell and got more judges approved in the first two years than any president in American history? The list goes on and on.”
Gingrich said Woodward has tarnished his own legacy with a sham book that panders to leftists. “His legacy is that his last great book is just a big lie,” Gingrich said. “That’s a sad commentary.”
What Trump-haters don’t realize is that another smear book is not going to sway his supporters. They are ride-or-die for Trump, the same way Barack Obama supporters are for him.
Similarly, not even a flowery pro-Trump book by a Democratic operative will convince his haters to like President Trump. We’ve already seen that you cannot appeal to reason when dealing with today’s Radical Left.
Bob Woodward should try to enjoy his first-week book sales, because they’ll probably tank in a few weeks. Just ask fired White House aide Omarosa Manigault Newman.
After strong initial sales, Omarosa’s anti-Trump book vanished into the ether — just like she will. Hardcover sales of her anti-Trump book plunged over 40 percent in its second week.
