Kellyanne Conway and CNN’s Chris Cuomo locked horns again in an explosive interview that had the White House counselor mocking the network’s jealousy of Fox News.
As they have in past encounters, the two sparred over just about everything, speaking over each other and disagreeing on just about every point on Thursday’s “Cuomo Prime Time.”
Conway kicked off the interview by telling the CNN anchor not to embarrass his mother on television and there was no turning back after that.
While discussing the opioid crisis at one point, Conway said the president “is breaking the back of the opioid crisis.”
“He’s not breaking the back on the opioid crisis,” Cuomo interrupted. “I can’t let you say things that aren’t true… Go to Fox for that.”
“Okay, I’m so glad you mentioned Fox, because none of you are able to get through most of your shows without mentioning them,” Conway responded, adding that it was “not a good look to be so jealous of Fox News’ ratings.”
“I almost never mention them by name,” Cuomo retorted. “I’m jealous of the opportunities they get to test power. They just don’t take them. That’s what I’m jealous of.”
The debate escalated as each raised their voices to be heard.
Conway attacked Cuomo’s journalistic integrity at one point, slamming CNN for interfering in the 2016 election with “phony polling” and other attempts at news.
“You were a world-class journalist. You used to go to plane crash sites and cover war and famine,” she said.
“I go now,” Cuomo replied.
“No, you don’t,” Conway said.
“I went to Helsinki and saw one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever seen in my life,” Cuomo said, referring to Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The White House aide slammed Cuomo for not caring about the real issues that matter to Americans, saying she speaks to them all the time because she is “not perched in some anchor’s lair, I mean chair, telling everybody, pontificating about what’s important to them.”
Conway accused Cuomo of not giving “respect” to the president while he argued that Trump had not always been truthful about hush-money payments allegedly made to silence women who claimed to have had affairs with him.
“The truth matters,” Cuomo said. “The truth is he lied about this. You guys should own it and move forward.”
Conway also accused Cuomo of being sexist for not letting her finish speaking and said, “You’re shutting me down.”
“Nobody can shut you down,” he replied. “We both know that.”
Following the wild ride of an interview, “CNN Tonight” host Don Lemon remarked, “I cannot get that 20 minutes of my life back.”
