‘Healthiest environment I’ve ever seen’: Target CEO ‘raves’ about consumer economy under Trump

With Democrats sensing blood in the water after President Donald Trump’s longtime lawyer, out to save his own hide, implicated Trump in criminal behavior as he ratted in open court, the best thing the president has going for him may be the economy.

And, boy, is it ever humming.

Just take the word of Target CEO Brian Cornell, who said Wednesday on a call with analysts that consumer spending has never been better, CNBC reported.

“There’s no doubt that, like others, we’re currently benefiting from a very strong consumer environment — perhaps the strongest I’ve seen in my career,” Cornell said.

Target just reported its strongest same-store sales growth in 13 years.

President Trump wasn’t about to look a gift horse in the mouth, taking to Twitter to cite Cornell’s testimony and promise the best is yet to come.

“Target CEO raves about the Economy. ‘This is the best consumer environment I’ve seen in my career.’ A big statement from a top executive. But virtually everybody is saying this, & when our Trade Deals are made, & cost cutting done, you haven’t seen anything yet!” he tweeted.

In an appearance on CNBC’s “Squawk Box,” Cornell again stressed that it’s the best environment he has ever seen.

“We’re seeing a great consumer response … unprecedented traffic. As we go back and look, we’ve never seen traffic growth like this,” he said Wednesday.

“It’s a very healthy consumer environment,” Cornell added. “I’ve been doing this for a long time — I think this is the healthiest environment I’ve ever seen.”

Trump drew criticism when he warned during an exclusive interview with Fox News host Ainsley Earhardt that the market wouldn’t react well if he was to be impeached.

“If I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash,” the president said. “I think everybody would be very poor, because without this thinking you would — you would see numbers that you wouldn’t believe in reverse.”

Fox News host Neil Cavuto led the criticism.

“All I’m saying is you don’t prevent a constitutional crisis by threatening a financial one,” Cavuto said. “But Mr. President, you guarantee both when your very actions and words create that crisis, or make people think that you’re hiding one.”

He went on to detail some of the controversies and inconsistencies that have marred Trump’s presidency.

“I know you’ll call this fake, but the implications of what you’re doing, Mr. President, are very real,” Cavuto then said. “You are so darned focused on promoting a financial boom, that you’ve failed to see that you are the one creating this moral bust. And we could all be the poorer for it.”
