The announcement of a GoFundMe page launched to cover the legal expenses for former Trump attorney Michael Cohen generated boos and laughter from a live television audience.
With a goal of raising $500,000, the Michael Cohen Truth Fund.” was launched on Wednesday by – Cohen’s attorney.
When Lanny Davis appeared on NBC’s “Megyn Kelly Today” show on Wednesday, seeking donations for the millionaire who pleaded guilty to bank fraud, tax fraud and campaign finance law violations, the audience broke out laughing.
“Could I just take one opportunity to remind everyone that Michael Cohen has suffered a tragic and difficult experience with his family?” Davis said. “He’s without resources and we’ve set up a website called ‘Michael Cohen Truth. com’ that we’re hoping that he will get some help from the American people so he can continue to tell the truth.”
“The audience … they don’t appear prepared to donate, Lanny,” Kelly said bluntly, prompting the attorney to attack the viewers as not being interested in the truth. He was met with a round of booing.
Kelly noted that the fundraising page had $70,000 in donations but backtracked and corrected the amount.
“By the way, I overstated, it’s $20,000, it’s not $70,000,” she said. “Hope springs eternal, I guess.”
Davis made the media rounds touting Cohen’s value to the Robert Mueller investigation as he created the hype for the crowdfunding campaign. But hours after its launch, the campaign was not generating much interest.

Update: 4 min after announcing it, GoFundMe website says “This campaign is trending!” and that it’s raised $70
— Zeke Miller (@ZekeJMiller) August 22, 2018
As of Wednesday morning, the funds had reached $34,000.
“Michael decided to put his family and his country first. Now Michael needs your financial help — to pay his legal fees,” the page description read, noting that the donations would purportedly help Cohen “as he goes forward on his journey to tell the truth about Donald Trump,”
That bit about telling the truth got some attention on social media.

My question to Lanny is:. Why are you asking for money on the show? If your client has so much to offer the #MuellerInvestigation then why won’t you represent him for FREE for the benefit of the Country? Many attys represent people probono. So to get the truth you want money?

SERIOUSLY? A go-fund-me for Cohen to tell the truth?
No thank you….It’s time for you to just tell the TRUTH without being funded!— Judy Sanchez (@jpsanchez511) August 22, 2018
So he needs money to tell the truth. LOL ?. You can’t make this stuff up.

Meanwhile, Davis took his pitch on the road, though it seems many have had the same reaction as Kelly’s audience.
