New Dem socialist threatens incumbent. Promotes costly agenda, but offers no original ideas on how to pay

Another Democratic Socialist has emerged as a congressional hopeful and seems, just like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, to be offering no new ideas.

Sarah Smith is hoping to unseat Democratic Rep. Adam Smith in Washington’s 9th Congressional District, modeling her campaign after New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The 30-year old is hoping her platform, which echoes that of Ocasio-Cortez with abolishing ICE to free everything, will help her defeat Smith, an 11-term incumbent, and Republican challenger Doug Basler.

Fox News’s Bill Hemmer thanked Smith Wednesday for coming on “The Story,” noting that Ocasio-Cortez has ignored requests from the network to appear.

When asked about funding for her platform, Smith insisted that single-payer healthcare will save taxpayers “a lot of money” as it will cost taxpayers $33 trillion instead of the current health care system which costs 47 trillion.

Smith did not point out the sources for her numbers.

She supports fellow socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders and his plan for a “speculative Wall Street tax” that would charge two-tenths of a percent on every dollar traded.

“It’s projected that’s going to generate yearly $370 billion dollars and if we earmark that specifically for education – education every year for college only costs about 75 billion,” she said.

Hemmer pointed out that to cover the big ticket items on Smith’s list, American taxpayers would have to foot the bill with raised taxes. He also questioned if she believed “the government can do a better job taking care of people than people can actually do on their own.”

“Because that’s the point of government,” she replied. “It’s to empower people to be able to self determine. The point of government is to be able to make sure people can choose their own fate and choose their own future without having to worry if they can go to the doctor. It’s about the government stepping in to take care of the most basic needs of people.”

Smith’s underwhelming choice of platform issues and action steps to move on them seem to mirror those by Ocasio-Cortez, But just like her Democratic socialist inspiration, Smith’s ideas lack originality and practicality.

Ocasio-Cortez seemed to have little idea how to implement her agenda, telling “The Daily Show” host Trevor Noah she would simply tax the rich and slash military spending.
