After panic ensued Saturday when an attempted robbery at a Texas shopping mall was mistaken for an active shooter situation, all seven suspects have been identified as Mexican nationals who illegally crossed the United States border.

The attempted robbery took place at a jewelry store at the La Plaza Mall in McAllen. At the time, the sound of shattered glass was misidentified as gunfire, leading bystanders to report an active gunman, according to Fox News. Following the incident, all suspects were apprehended and taken into police custody with no shots ever fired.

All seven suspects were arraigned in court Monday and have been identified as Mexican nationals, reported Fox News. Five of the suspects allegedly provided the McAllen police with fake names.

Some of the suspects have been previously deported, but it is unconfirmed how many, according to CBS News’s David Begnaud. The suspects had reportedly paid $4,500 per person to be smuggled across the U.S.-Mexico border and had been in McAllen for a few weeks prior to the robbery.
