What happens when an illegal has a straw? Cali city takes straw ban to the extreme, raises fury & questions

The ban on plastic straws in one California city carries with it a hefty fine and possible jail time for violators.

The overreach of progressives in Santa Barbara is eyebrow-raising to say the least , but the new law which goes into effect in 2019 is even more ridiculous when it is put into perspective.

Last fall,, California’s Democratic Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill making it no longer a felony in the state to knowingly expose someone to HIV without telling them. The misdemeanor carries a 6-month prison term, the same as someone caught using plastic straws in Santa Barbara.

Not sure if Democrats in the state actually realize they are equating the public health hazard of spreading a disease to the use of plastic drinking implements.

As founder of Live Action, a national pro-life and human rights group, noted on Twitter, straw use could land you in jail in California but abortions continue to be perfectly legal.

Santa Barbara passed the bill banning the distribution or sale of plastic straws back in June, with some exceptions in light of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The maximum fine in Seattle, the first major U.S. city to ban plastic straws in July, is just $250, compared to Santa Barbara which imposes a maximum fine of $1,000 and up to six months in jail for repeat offenders, according to Newsweek.

Starbucks announced it would be phasing out plastic straws in all of its stores as well as the latest progressive trend takes root. The premise for the environmentally conscious ban is that American’s go through 500 million straws a day.

But it turns out, the straw ban is based on 9-yr-old’s research and has been repeatedly promoted, reported and legislated without disputing those claims.

“That a municipality would ban plastic straws is sadly unsurprising in the year 2018, when seemingly every city, celebrity, corporation, and cute kid with a nonprofit wants to eliminate the little suckers from polite society,” Reason reported.

The publication also noted “the dubious environmental benefits of banning straws, which make up a tiny fraction of plastic waste.”

Another shining example of the nonsense from the left.
