Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell fired back at Democrats who criticized Supreme Court Justice nominee Brett Kavanaugh for his baseball debt, saying that it was a “breaking news bombshell report … that Judge Kavanaugh enjoys America’s pastime” on the Senate floor Thursday.
“In a breaking news bombshell report just last night we learned that Judge Kavanaugh enjoys America’s pastime. Investigative reporters scoured his financial disclosures and learned that he and his friend buy tickets to baseball games, and that he pays his bills,” McConnell said.

Kavanaugh briefly went into debt from buying Washington Nationals season tickets for himself and his friends, according to a Washington Post report on Wednesday. Kavanaugh had debt “between $60,000 and 200,000 … accrued over three credit cards and a loan,” according to the report.
Four graphs in, the report details that all of the debt was paid off and that Kavanaugh’s friends reimbursed him for the baseball tickets.
Several leading liberals criticized Kavanaugh for his debt, with CNN’s Chris Cillizza notably tweeting “Brett Kavanaugh, call your office” on Wednesday with a link to The Washington Post’s article.

Kavanaugh also has received pushback for being too “fratty,” with NARAL Pro-Choice America tweeting that Kavanaugh was “some frat boy named Brett” on Tuesday.

Kavanaugh was nominated Monday by President Donald Trump to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh’s confirmation would tilt the Court notably more conservative than it was with Kennedy, with Kennedy often being seen as the Court’s swing vote.
