Border Patrol says de Blasio crossed US-Mexico border illegally, breaking laws in both countries

There can be no better example of Democrats not respecting the concept of borders than New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio illegally crossing the southern border with Mexico.

Joining mayors from around the country, de Blasio went to the U.S.-Mexico border last month to score political points over President Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy toward illegal immigration.

While one might think the mayor would have his hands full running the largest city in America, a scarier possibility may be that his interest in national affairs could be a sign of a looming de Blasio presidential run.

Either way, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said de Blasio and his security detail violated immigration laws from both countries when they crossed the border on foot near El Paso, Texas, the New York Post reported.

In a letter sent to New York Police Department Commissioner James O’Neill, which was obtained by The Associated Press, de Blasio was accused of violating the law and disregarding a border patrol agent’s request to stay put until a supervisor could be contacted.

More from The Post:

According to the letter, a uniformed Border Patrol agent noticed a group on the Rio Grande River flood plain south of the Tornillo, Texas, Port of Entry, taking photos of the holding facility. The agent asked if anyone from Border Patrol or public affairs was there to authorize their presence. A New York Police Department inspector said no, according to the letter, and when the agent asked the group how they arrived, they pointed to Mexico.

The agent told them they’d crossed the border illegally and asked them to remain there while he got a supervisor and took them to an official crossing for an inspection per federal law, according to the letter. But the group disregarded the order and drove back to Mexico, according to the letter.

The mayors were intent on grandstanding as they attempted to visit a holding facility for illegal immigrant children, but were denied entry. According to The Post, de Blasio then went to Mexico and crossed into the U.S. to get a view of the facility.

The Democrat made the trip to the southern border with his security detail, which is handled by the New York Police Department.

The mayor’s office denied any laws were broken, smearing Border Patrol by calling their assertion a “flat-out lie.”

“The mayor crossed the border with the direct approval and under the supervision of the border patrol supervisor at this port of entry,” De Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips said in an email to the AP. “Any suggestion otherwise is a flat-out lie and an obvious attempt by someone to attack the Mayor because of his advocacy for families being ripped apart at the border by the Trump Administration.”
