‘Freezing, overcrowded, filthy’: Lawsuit reveals conditions migrants endured in Obama-era detainment centers

President Donald Trump is bearing the brunt of the blame for recent reports on how illegal immigrants and their children are treated, courtesy of the national media, but the conditions being exposed frequently occurred under the Obama administration.

Under former President Barack Obama, detention centers were used to house those who illegally entered the U.S., with adults and children held in fenced in enclosures that are being compared to cages, and, yes, families were separated.

Housing conditions at a Tucson, Arizona facility were detailed in a 2015 class-action lawsuit filed by the American Immigration Council and the American Civil Liberties Union, The Daily Caller reported.

The “filthy” conditions were not reserved for adults only, according to the lawsuit:

“The complaint alleges that Tucson Sector Border Patrol holds men, women, and children in freezing, overcrowded, and filthy cells for days at a time in violation of the U.S. Constitution and CBP’s own policies. Detained individuals are stripped of outer layers of clothing and forced to suffer in brutally cold temperatures; deprived of beds, bedding, and sleep; denied adequate food, water, medicine and medical care, and basic sanitation and hygiene items such as soap, sufficient toilet paper, sanitary napkins, diapers, and showers; and held virtually incommunicado in these conditions for days.”

Photos of these housing conditions, occurring during the Obama administration, were published by the American Immigration Council.

Illegal immigrants are seen sleeping on the floor in packed areas, using foil blankets to stay warm. Trash can be seen scattered on the floor and in one photo, a mother is seen changing a baby’s diaper amid the rubbish.

An immigration attorney, R. Andrew Free, documented online in a series of tweets a damning exchange he had at the time with President Obama on the conditions:

Yet, no outcry from liberal activists disguised as journalists. At least, not until Donald Trump was elected president.
