Trump doubles down on obeying law that’s causing family separation: ‘The US will not be a migrant camp … not on my watch’

President Trump declared that the U.S. will not become “a migrant camp” as he defended his administration’s policy of separating children from parents who cross the border illegally.

“Immigration is the fault and all of the problem we are having because we can not get them to sign legislation, we cannot even get them to negotiate to the table. And I say this very strongly: it’s the Democrats’ fault,” Trump said at a meeting with the National Space Council on Monday.

“The U.S. will not be a migrant camp and it will not be a refugee holding facility, it wont be,” the president added. “We can’t allow that to happen in the United States, not on my watch.”

The administration has come under heavy fire for its announcement of a “zero-tolerance” policy against illegal border crossings as children have to be separated from parents at the U.S. border if they have illegally attempted to enter the country.

“We want safety and we want security for our country,” Trump said, shifting the blame on Democrats for the Obama-era policy.  “If the Democrats would sit down instead of obstructing we could have something done very quickly –  good for the children, good for the country, good for the world.”

Earlier Monday, the president issued a challenge in a series of tweets to Democrats to pass his immigration priories if they want to see a change.

Trump’s proposed legislation would fund his border wall, put an end to chain migration and discontinue the diversity visa lottery system, The Daily Caller reported.

“We’re stuck with these horrible laws. They’re horrible laws,” Trump said at the National Space Council meeting.

“What’s happening is so sad, is so sad. And it can be taken care of quickly, beautifully, and we’ll have safety,” he said.  “This could really be something very special, it could be something, maybe even for the world to watch, just like they’re watching our great economy, how it is soaring. They could watch this.”

In an op-ed for Fox Business Network, Stuart Varney wrote that Trump is the “only one with a workable solution to the generation-long migrant mess,” and called on lawmakers to pass his policy proposals.

“The president’s answer is: build a wall. Deter illegal entry with strict border enforcement. The Democrats want neither…. They won’t say it, but they’re sticking with open borders, so long as it works in their political interests,” Varney wrote, citing the catastrophe of open borders in Germany.

“Three years ago, an army of migrants marched across Europe, demanding entry and Germany’s chancellor, Angela Merkel, let them all in, and changed Europe forever. Now, the country’s open-border policy has been shredded,” Varney wrote. “Something similar is taking shape on our southern border. A rush to get in, but in America, there is a president determined to enforce the no-entry laws.”

Varney warned that, just as Merkel “is fighting for her political life,” similar policies in the U.S. that keep migrants pouring in while Democrats welcome them with open arms, will have devastating results.
