Department of Homeland Security Sec. Kirstjen Nielsen slammed “misreporting” about the Trump administration enforcing an immigration policy of separating children from parents illegally crossing the U.S. border.
Nielsen fired back at the liberal hysteria over an Obama-era policy that has President Trump at the center of attacks over the family separation policy.

Nielsen called for truthful reporting on the distinction between those arriving at ports of entry seeking asylum and those who are caught crossing the U.S. border illegally.
This misreporting by Members, press & advocacy groups must stop. It is irresponsible and unproductive. As I have said many times before, if you are seeking asylum for your family, there is no reason to break the law and illegally cross between ports of entry.

You are not breaking the law by seeking asylum at a port of entry.

The comments by the DHS Secretary were in response to backlash over Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ new “zero-tolerance” policy of enforcing immigration laws at the border. And while family separations occurred during former President Obama’s eight years in office, the latest narrative is intent on pinning Trump with the shame of allegedly “ripping” children out of their parents’ arms.

Nielsen doubled down on the fact that children are separated when the adults have broken the law.
For those seeking asylum at ports of entry, we have continued the policy from previous Administrations and will only separate if the child is in danger, there is no custodial relationship between ‘family’ members, or if the adult has broken a law.

DHS takes very seriously its duty to protect minors in our temporary custody from gangs, traffickers, criminals and abuse.

The secretary addressed the media reports in a speech as well, warning “Don’t believe the press.”

Nielsen’s definitive statement that there is no family separating policy drew even more fire from the left.
We do not have a policy of separating families at the border. Period.

That is a barefaced non-fact. Exclamation point. https://t.co/ceh22V8nN2

Many responded to Nielsen’s tweets with support, defending the law and the DHS’ s enforcement.
Everyone needs to read the actual policy for the facts of it…read it all!! Why didnt Obama change it? But hey since Trump is president, it all of a sudden becomes an issue…more selective outrage by the left. https://t.co/jWQ38EdEdl

????In 2013 there were over 25,000 children in 80 shelters under Obama….nothing said. Under Pres Trump there are 10,852.
There are many reasons they are in shelters. Some were unaccompanied, some not with their parents. MSM & Dems lie again!https://t.co/QyHgGP4sxF— Southern Belle (@SBelle1950) June 18, 2018
This is why we need the WALL. Wall=barrier=no intrusion or illegal crossings=no arrests=no separation of “illegal families!”
Problem solved! These dems will constantly pander to everything illegal AND nefarious to undermine our President and our great country!
Build that wall!!— SS (@Johnyhatesliars) June 18, 2018
Thank you @SecNielsen and all trying to stop spread of #FakenEWS WHICH IS INDEED, dividing our Nation further. Daily lies are irresponsible and hurtful. #FedUp @kimguilfoyle
