Stonewall Jackson Elementary School in Dallas ditches its name

A Texas school district put up a sign Monday as part of an effort to change Stonewall Jackson Elementary School into Mockingbird Elementary School.

Dallas Independent School District installed the Mockingbird sign and plans to also change the names of schools named after Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and William Cabell to Geneva Heights and Chapel Hill Preparatory School, respectively, reported Fox 4.

Stonewall Jackson Principal Melanie Mans clarified that while the school raised the Mockingbird sign Monday, the school’s name would not officially change until July 1.

The district previously estimated the name changes would cost $150,000 when it originally made the renaming decision in December. Dallas ISD spokeswoman Robyn Harris could not provide The Daily Caller News Foundation with an updated cost in time for press.

Dallas ISD is not the only district to change Confederate school names. Virginia’s Arlington School Board voted on June 7 to rename its Washington-Lee High School. Another Virginia high school, formerly named after Confederate general and slave owner J.E.B. Stuart, removed the first three letters of its name.
