Chelsea Manning is safe after apparent public suicide threat; cry for help posted with creepy photo

Transgender advocate Chelsea Manning is safe after tweeting an apparent suicide threat Sunday night. She later deleted the suicide note, but screenshots captured a photo of a barefoot Manning standing on the ledge of a building, as if to jump to her death.

“Chelsea is safe,” a tweet from Manning’s Twitter handle read. “She is on the phone with friends. Thanks everyone for your concern and please give her some space.”

In a series of since-deleted tweets, Chelsea apparently threatened suicide, writing: “I’m sorry – I tried – I’m sorry I let you all down.”

She continued: “I’m not really cut out for this world. I tried adapting to this world out here but I failed you – I couldn’t do this anymore. I can take people I don’t know hating me but not my own friends. I tried and I’m sorry about my failure.”

Manning, who lives in Bethesda, Maryland, is currently running for U.S. senate in Maryland. Last week, Chelsea expressed frustration that her campaign isn’t gaining much support.

“I’ve been knocking on doors and making phone calls all over Maryland lately,” Manning tweeted. “Most people aren’t interested in voting, or elections, or civil discourse anymore – they’ve heard it all before – they don’t think it will make a difference – and they are right.”

At one point, an exasperated Manning said voting won’t change anything, and it was time to do “something radically different,” leading many to wonder what she meant by that.

Before Chelsea underwent a sex-change operation and hormone therapy, she was a soldier in the U.S. Army whose name was Bradley Manning. In 2013, Bradley was sentenced to 35 years in prison for espionage for leaking 700,000 classified military documents online.

It was the largest leak of classified data in U.S. history. Experts say the extensive leaks endangered American lives around the world. Manning was set free in 2017 by former president Barack Obama on his last day in office, when he commuted her sentence.

During his jail stint, Manning repeatedly tried to commit suicide and complained about being clinically depressed. Despite his “severe depression,” Manning successfully sued for the right to get hormone therapy and undergo sex-change surgery in jail — all on taxpayers’ dime.

In May 2017, Bradley walked out of jail as Chelsea Manning, and has since been embraced as a liberal icon. To this day, Manning insists she is “not a traitor” even though she admitted that she leaked top-secret intel.

Last week, Manning was widely slammed by liberals for saying “voting won’t change anything.” There’s widespread speculation that the backlash she suffered from fellow liberals is what drove her to threaten suicide.

We’re glad that Manning is safe, but her suicide threats (and past suicide attempts) perhaps lend some credence to President Trump’s decision to ban transgender soldiers from the U.S. military.

President Trump underscored that he has nothing against transgender people and said his top priority is that our military trains soldiers who are mentally and physically capable of doing their jobs without undue burden on their peers or on taxpayers.

Suicide attempts are alarmingly common among transgender individuals. In fact, 41% try to kill themselves at some point, compared with 4.6% of the general public, according to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. If you’re a soldier, is this who you want in the trenches next to you in the heat of battle? Be honest.

Supporters of the transgender military ban say it’s unfair to force taxpayers to pay for trans individuals’ expensive sex-change operations. Many also say it’s unfair to other soldiers, who must work year-round while transgender individuals undergoing gender reassignment can take weeks/months off during their sex change.

Looking beyond the taxpayer-funded medical costs, Dr. Paul R. McHugh, the former chief psychiatrist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, has said changing sexes is “biologically impossible” and that being transgender is a “mental disorder.”

Dr. McHugh’s analysis affirmed the conclusion of the American College of Pediatricians, which condemned gender reclassification of children as child abuse.
