Green Beret who waterboarded self explains why it works on terrorist ‘cowards,’ and why it’s not torture

Green Beret Tim Kennedy believes the effectiveness of waterboarding depended completely on who was on the board.

The former UFC fighter who created a viral uproar when he declared that “waterboarding is not torture” explained exclusively to The Daily Caller why the technique breaks terrorists but not trained special forces operators.

“The point of doing it was trying to force a conversation,” he said. “And trying to bring awareness to something that I’m really familiar with — we’ve been at war for 17 years and I’ve been in the special forces for 15 years. And the conversation has been, unfortunately, perceived as negative.”

In a show of support for President Trump’s nominee for CIA director, Gina Haspel, Kennedy posted a demo of himself being waterboarded to prove the controversial interrogation technique is just very uncomfortable and not the “torture” some are claiming. The nomination of Haspel, a 33-year veteran of the CIA, is being opposed by Democratic lawmakers – and Sen. John McCain – because of her role in the CIA’s methods following the 9/11 attacks.

“I’m against torture. I’m also against terrorism. I think what no one understands is that the reason that waterboarding was effective was because of who we were waterboarding,” Kennedy told The Daily Caller.

“If you waterboard me, if you strapped me down, and you poured or electrocuted me — you could do anything to me — I am so in control because I am not a horrible human,” the special forces veteran of 15 years said. “I know what I’m doing, and I believe in what I’m doing.”

Kennedy’s video has been viewed over 3 million times and created an online debate which he sees as polarizing given the lack of understanding about the method and its goal.

“These people are cowards. They’re bullies,” he said of terrorists.  “They only prey upon the innocent. They only prey upon the weak. And when they lose control, they lose everything. They lose their ability to cognitively think. They lose control of what they’re supposed to be talking about and what they’re not supposed to be talking about.”

The Special Forces Sniper and Army Ranger added that “the hardest part is trying to convince somebody that totally disagrees with me on what waterboarding is, about the person that’s sitting on that board.”

“And there’s a huge difference between me and them,” Kennedy explained. “You could waterboard me for days — for years — and I would still be cracking jokes about how bad Rachel Maddow is.”
