‘Morning Joe’ ignores hostage release to talk baseball, then decides to bash Trump anyway

MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” crew opened Thursday’s show chatting about baseball, and still found time to bash President Donald Trump after the release of three American hostages from North Korea.

Co-host Mika Brzezinski tried to open with the hostage release, but host Joe Scarborough quickly pivoted to the Yankees/Red Sox game instead.

“Joe, you tweeted last night, ‘Bloodthirsty tyrants get no credit for kidnapping Americans, using them as bait and releasing them for cheap headlines,’” Brzezinski said. “‘North Korea is a terrorist state. That has lied to the United States for decades.’ And of course we know that 22-year-old Otto Warmbier … was sent home in June of last year and then later died because he was in such bad shape. Joe, you tweeted that late last night.”

“Yeah I tweeted that late last night. I won’t tell you what I was doing,” Scarborough replied. “Let’s just say our bullpen did not perform in the eighth and ninth inning as it should have performed. But I don’t want to talk about it. Congratulations, Willie. No it was a great game last night Willie. A couple of great games and last night, Red Sox, it was back and forth affair. Red Sox, 6-5, until what, the eighth inning and then the Yankees just stepped on the gas.”

When Scarborough finally stopped talking baseball, he criticized Trump for making “diplomatic mistakes” and painted him as overly enthusiastic in his dealings with North Korea.

“It just leads me again to worry, what we were saying yesterday. As you know, one of my chief complaints during the Iran deal was that America seemed to be over-eager for a deal and we didn’t get the terms that I personally thought at the time we could have gotten. It seems like we’re doing the same thing with Donald Trump,” he said. “He rushes into West Wing offices when he’s not supposed to be in meetings, saying hey, let’s get together and have a summit. None of the groundwork’s been laid.”

“This seems like he’s making the classic, classic diplomatic mistake of thinking that he can charm his way into a win, on the diplomatic stage,” Scarborough concluded.
