An unrepentant artist from the California town of Chula Vista incited massive outrage last weekend after she exploited a scholarship fundraising event to paint a disturbing mural that depicted the decapitated head of President Donald Trump.
During the Battlegroundz fundraiser at the MAAC Community Charter School, students and artists from around the country were invited to paint urban art murals in an alleyway reportedly behind the school.
Artist Sasha Andrade used the opportunity to express her disturbing views regarding the president of the United States of America.
After her mural went viral on social media, outrage quickly followed, spurring the school to first cover up the mural with black plastic and later upgrade the cover to plywood.
“We understand that there was a mural painted at the event this past weekend that does not align with our school’s philosophy of non-violence,” MAAC Community Charter School director Tommy Ramirez reportedly wrote in a statement. “We have been in communication with the artist — who has agreed to modify the artwork — to better align with the school’s philosophy.”
It seems unlikely Andrade was sincere in her statements to the school, judging by her behavior on social media, where she’s been proudly advertising her “art” and likewise touting her right to freedom of expression:
But as noted by a local who speak with San Diego station KUSI, “With freedom of expression and freedom of speech comes responsibility.”
“[T]hat’s taking it to a whole different level. You have like a spear going through a president’s throat or like face like you showed me, and that’s too much, too graphic for a school setting,” one young man said.
Andrade has also been highlighting hateful messages she’s allegedly received from others. While sending hateful messages and death threats is no doubt wrong, it’s ironic that she would complain about such messages, given the hatefulness of her own mural.
“The only thing this man has done, bring racism and white supremacists to hide behind their computers and harass anyone who does not support trump. It irritates me and saddens me that this is the country we are living in full of hate and fascist people,” she wrote on Facebook.
It remains unclear if she feels similarly about the racist liberals who label black conservatives “Uncle Toms” or the actual fascists among the radical left who seek to silence all conservative voices in America. Given her myopic and skewed worldview — one likely acquired from watching far too much “fake news” CNN — it’s unlikely she even she cares.
