Pope Francis, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, took to Twitter on Sunday to propose a “ban on all weapons,” which the Holy See suggested would enable us to live in a world of peace without “fear of war.”
But then, such fanciful theories seldom find solace on social media.
“Do we really want peace? Then let’s ban all weapons so we don’t have to live in fear of war,” read the papal Twitter account.

The tweet calls to mind John Lennon’s antithesis of a call to arms, “Imagine,” where the songwriter imagines a Utopian world without borders or divisions, where there’s “nothing to kill or die for.”
“Imagine no possessions, and no religion, too,” tweeted Steve Deace, borrowing from the lyrics of “Imagine.”

The Pope’s tweet reinforces the “Pope Karl” moniker critics often hang on The Holy Father for what they see as his left-of-center, Marxist-inspired views of the world.
We have nicknamed him Pope Karl Marx II.

It also drew the obvious reference to the Pontifical Swiss Guard, the de facto armed forces of Vatican City.

Yep, it’s safe to say Pope Francis did not get the response he was hoping for. Here’s a sampling of other reactions from Twitter:

Pope Francis dismounts from his purple unicorn, pulls out his laptop and fires off a tweet.
I, for one, am sick of having a Pope who makes my eyes roll to the back of my skull every time he speaks. https://t.co/HBQqq0rKKR

All your strategy would do is make the nations who want peace/gave up their weapons ‘sheep waiting for slaughter’ – totally vulnerable to the nations who don’t want peace/would never actually give up their weapons https://t.co/lqzRRSr4Ru

I think the Pope has been hacked. But if not, why not ban hatred and murder. Why not put those ideas in a book three thousand years ago and talk about that and not about state's banning weapons? https://t.co/G2Sru4JSBn

Disarmament is not peace. There will always be a means with which to fight your enemies when you feel powerless- if not with arms, then with sticks or rocks, or whatever. Peace is when we choose to live in harmony because we can. Because we have the power to. https://t.co/0JIDvO8D0V
