Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee almost cried Monday after Democratic Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware voted present to allow CIA Director Mike Pompeo’s nomination for secretary of state to move forward.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee voted 11-9 in favor of Pompeo. Republican Sen. Johnny Isakson of Georgia was not present for the committee vote due to a funeral.
Pompeo’s nomination will now move to the full Senate and be put up for a vote.
“I’m thankful that our committee voted the way it did to move Mike Pompeo on a positive vote to the floor,” Corker said at a press conference. “I in particular want to thank Senator Coons for displaying the statesmanship [pauses] that I’ve been accustomed to seeing in the Senate.”
“I’m proud of him. I’m proud of our committee,” he concluded.
