DOJ takes sanctuary cities fight to next level. We want proof you are complying…

Leftist legislators in the “sanctuary cities” of Seattle, Washington, and Oakland, California, whined like babies this week after Attorney General Jeff Sessions slammed them with an ultimatum: Respond to the department’s information requests or face his wrath.

Sent to Seattle, Oakland and the state of Vermont, the ultimatum demanded all three jurisdictions offer concrete proof that they’re complying with federal immigration law and cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.

The ultimatum further warned that the Justice Department will employ its subpoena power to force compliance if necessary.

“When cities and states enact policies that thwart the federal government’s ability to enforce federal immigration law, they choose to place the protection of criminal aliens over the safety of their communities,” Sessions said in a statement.

“The Justice Department will not tolerate this intentional effort to undermine public safety and the rule of law, and I continue to remind all jurisdictions to reconsider policies that put their residents in harm’s way.”

The reaction from liberal legislators was one of unjustified moral indignation.

“The federal govt. does not get to run our cities or convert our local law enforcement officials into immigration cops,” Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan announced on Twitter, adding that her city allegedly already “complies with federal immigration law”:

Either she was lying or she’s one of the many liberals who’re incapable of differentiating legal immigrants from illegal immigrants. The unrelated photo she shared to Twitter of legal immigrants being naturalized suggests she’s in the latter camp.

Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf’s reply was just as full of nonsense.

“Oakland is proud to be a sanctuary city and we are in compliance with federal immigration law,” she said in a statement, as reported by local station KRON.

As Oakland remains a “sanctuary city” for illegal immigrants, it’s not in fact in compliance with federal immigration law. Not to mention that Libby intentionally tried to sideline ICE officials two months ago by warning illegal immigrants of an upcoming raid:

She can’t cater to criminals in one breath but profess to be following the law in another.

Yet, just like Durkan, Schaaf seems to believe that only the laws she personally likes matter. But that’s not how the rule of law works.
